policy has led to high drop-out rates among those African<br />

American students who are not academically prepared<br />

for the level of coursework for which schools artificially<br />

selected them. It also attaches a stigma to all minority students<br />

regardless of their qualifications, because people<br />

tend to think that schools admitted them because of affirmative<br />

action.<br />

Focusing on increasing terminal outcomes, like the<br />

percentage of minorities employed in a certain industry,<br />

ignores the social and economic factors that make it difficult<br />

for minorities to achieve representative employment<br />

on their own. 13 While increased campus diversity<br />

is a desirable goal, the methods that affirmative action<br />

employs result in student resentment, minority underpreparedness,<br />

and discrimination against nonprotected<br />

students. The policy of affirmative action in university<br />

admissions has substituted yesterday’s “good old boys”<br />

cronyism for an updated, politically correct form of<br />

cronyism.<br />

The motivating forces behind feminism and social justice—the<br />

reaction against unjust government privilege of<br />

males and whites—were fruitful and necessary catalysts<br />

that established a more liberal society. The eradication<br />

of Jim Crow laws and the extension of economic rights<br />

to women were important steps toward eliminating the<br />

cronyism of the past. Modern advocates for social justice,<br />

however, have called for replacing the privileges that their<br />

activist predecessors fought so hard to destroy with a new<br />

set of privileges for a new set of privileged groups. Rather<br />

than advocating for social justice as an environment in<br />

which the law treats everyone as equal and everyone as<br />
