South West Rail Link
The South West Rail Link is
designed to meet the predicted
population growth in southwest
Sydney and increased
passenger numbers on the
metropolitan rail network.
The link will provide new rail
services to the growing south-west
region, additional services on the
East Hills Line and train stabling
to support the Airport and East
Hills Line, South Line, Bankstown
Line and Inner West Line.
Supporting projects include Auburn
train stabling and an airport line
power upgrade by RailCorp. The
new train stabling north-west of
Auburn station will cater for the
expected increase in demand
for train services in Sydney’s
inner-west and south-west.
Stage one of the project includes
accommodation for up to 11
eight-car trains, staff amenities
and offices, and noise mitigation.
Stage two, including stabling for
five more eight-car trains, will be
delivered when demand dictates.
Worksites were set up in June
2012. Preparatory works such as
geotechnical investigations and
surveying have also commenced.
The work by contractor John
Holland covers design and
construction. Services are
expected to begin in early 2014.
Light rail will play an important
part in meeting the city’s
future transport needs.
In March TfNSW purchased
Sydney’s light rail and monorail
owner, Metro Transport Sydney,
Operational performance
The project comprises:
for $19.8 million. This was to
enable efficient delivery of
Glenfield transport interchange
This is a major upgrade to Glenfield
Station including lifts, a multi-storey
commuter car park (completed),
more parking spaces at Seddon
Park (completed), an upgrade
of the bus-rail interchange in
Railway Parade, a rail flyover
to the north of the station, and
rail and road modifications.
Glenfield to Leppington rail line
This includes 11.4 kilometres of
new twin track from Glenfield
to Leppington. It is in the early
stages of construction.
It also includes a new station and
commuter car park at Edmondson
Park, a new station and commuter
car park at Leppington and a new
train stabling facility to the west of
Leppington station in Rossmore.
The new line is expected be
integrated into the existing rail
network in 2016.
Inner West Light Rail
contract award
A $176 million contract has been
awarded to build Sydney’s Inner
West Light Rail Extension.
The work includes:
• a 5.6 km extension of the existing
light rail between Central and
Lilyfield to Dulwich Hill, using the
former Rozelle rail freight corridor
• nine new light rail stops:
Leichhardt North, Hawthorne,
Marion, Taverners Hill,
Lewisham West, Waratah Mills,
Arlington, Dulwich Grove and
Dulwich Hill Interchange
• real-time passenger information
at the new and existing stops
• new access paths and
facilities for switching
between transport modes
• kiss-and-ride parking and
accessible parking spaces
future light rail extensions and
removal of the monorail to
accommodate a new convention
centre at Darling Harbour.
In addition to delivering the Inner
West Light Rail Extension, TfNSW
– which is now responsible for the
light rail system – is investigating
the feasibility of extending light rail
through the Sydney central business
district to the University of NSW
and to the University of Sydney.
This is part of a Sydney Light
Rail Strategic Plan, which is
being developed with industry
experts and local stakeholders.
A dedicated TfNSW light rail
program team has been established
to bring light rail work into a single
Sydney Light Rail Program.
• protecting flora and fauna
along the rail corridor.
