NSW Speed Camera
Strategy
A NSW Speed Camera Strategy
announced in June 2012 will
see money raised from cameradetected
speeding, red-light and
point-to-point traffic offences
spent on road safety programs.
The mobile speed camera
program is being expanded from
six vehicles moving between
142 locations for 930 hours of
enforcement per month to about
45 mobile speed camera vehicles
using about 2500 locations for
7000 hours of enforcement per
month. The new program will be
fully operational by July 2013.
TfNSW and the NSW Police Force
have identified 500 new high risk
locations to be scrutinised with the
current six mobile speed cameras.
Increased visibility of speed camera
monitoring will be provided with
new signs which read ‘Mobile Speed
Camera Vehicle Ahead’ instead of
‘Safety Camera Vehicle Ahead.’
There will be two sign warnings,
at 250m and 50m, as motorists
approach a mobile speed
camera vehicle. There will
also be another sign after the
vehicle passes it, reading, “Your
Speed Has Been Checked.”
Red light speed camera locations
will be increased from 91 to
200 intersections by the end
of 2014, along with changes in
warning signs for drivers.
P Drivers Project
The P Drivers Project, launched
in October, is a large scale trial of
a new young drivers education
program. More than 27,000 new
provisional drivers in Victoria
and NSW are involved.
It aims to achieve measurable
reductions in the number of
novice driver crashes.
The project is a partnership of
the Commonwealth, NSW and
Victorian Governments and industry
stakeholders that include NRMA
Insurance, the Royal Automobile
Club of Victoria and the Federal
Chamber of Automotive Industries.
Participants can take part in an
eight hour educational program
developed by professional
behaviour change and road safety
experts on young drivers. Over
a number of sessions it includes
face-to-face group discussions
and an on-road coaching session.
Its focus is on program delivery
and implementation in regional
areas, and to disadvantaged
provisional drivers.
About 9,000 NSW new
provisional drivers had taken part
in the program by June 30.
Some 1,000 of the NSW provisional
drivers are involved in a trial in
four regions: Tamworth/Armidale,
Lismore/Tweed Heads, Dubbo/
Forbes and Western Sydney.
The program will continue
throughout 2012, and is expected
to end in the second half of 2013.
Road safety campaigns
Better coordination of marketing
activities across all transport
agencies by TfNSW enables
improved targeting of key
audiences for road safety messages
through integrated campaign
activities and new forms of media.
This year TfNSW’s Customer
Experience division took
responsibility for developing
and implementing the Centre
for Road Safety’s program of
road safety campaigns.
Research and the development
continued of a new drink driving
campaign. It targets young men,
who are overrepresented in alcoholrelated
crashes and fatalities.
The campaign will encourage
those who decide to drink to
choose a plan B instead of
driving. The “Plan B” campaign
is scheduled to be launched
across NSW in August 2012.
