Fair Go for Safe Drivers
Half price licences were
announced for NSW motorists
with a good driving record for
five years – and about 2.1 million
of 4.3 million unrestricted licence
holders are eligible. It will come
into effect on 1 July 2012.
The scheme applies to renewals
of unrestricted driver licences:
annual (full price $52), three years
($122) and five years ($162).
Provisional licence holders will
also be eligible for the discount.
However, time without relevant
offences while holding a P1 or P2
licence will count towards the fiveyear
eligibility period once holders
progress to an unrestricted licence.
Each year, hundreds of people are
killed on NSW roads due to unsafe
driving behaviour. The scheme
is regarded as a practical way to
reward people with good driving
records and encourage better
driving behaviour in others.
A similar scheme has been
operating successfully in Victoria
since 2006. It offers a 25 per
cent licence fee reduction.
Safer Roads NSW
website
A website dedicated to giving
the community a voice about
road safety initiatives, including
speed zones, speed signs
and speed cameras, became
operational in July 2011.
One of the capabilities of the
Safer Roads NSW website
enables customers to suggest
locations for speed cameras.
As at 30 June, there had been
36,413 visits to the website, with
3,295 submissions to “Have
Your Say on Speed Limits”, 113
suggestions for speed camera
locations and 1,107 subscribers
to email notifications about
permanent speed limit changes.
Subsequent information
enhancements about speeding
have been made available to
the customers of this website as
fact sheets and email updates.
Road fatalities
Provisional data for 2011-12
indicate that there were 396
fatalities, 8 per cent more than
the provisional figure for 2010-11,
but the third lowest number for
a financial year since 1944-45.
Analysis of the provisional fatal
crash data for the financial year
ending 30 June 2012 revealed that:
• Speeding was a factor in around
38 per cent of fatalities
• At least 12 per cent of
fatalities were the result of
a crash involving a driver or
rider with a blood alcohol
level above the legal limit
• At least 13 per cent of people
killed in motor vehicles were not
wearing available restraints
• Driver fatigue contributed to
about 18 per cent of fatalities
• At least 14 per cent of
motorcyclists killed were
not wearing helmets.
Motorcyclists accounted for
15 per cent of fatalities.
