Appendix 29: Research and development Primary Research • Household Travel Survey 2011–12 – This continuous survey by TfNSW’s Bureau of Transport Statistics provides comprehensive information on the travel patterns of residents of Sydney, Newcastle and the Illawarra. It informs transport planning and policy and monitors the strategic NSW 2021 targets for public transport mode share. • Sydney Cycling Survey 2011 – TfNSW and Roads and Maritime Services measured cycling activity (mode share) against the NSW 2021 target. The survey also collected information on community cycling participation and its attitudes about toward cycling. • Rail barrier counts for CBD Stations 2012 – The annual barrier count of CBD stations was conducted in May. The data collected is an important input to rail patronage estimates, for strategic rail planning and timetabling. Model Development • Public Transport Project Model – This was developed to estimate public transport patronage for project evaluation. It has been used extensively to provide patronage forecasts for the North West Rail Link and Sydney Strategic Light Rail Plan projects, Long Term Transport Master Plan, Rail Strategy and Bus Plan. Other Research • Transport market surveys for the North West Rail Link, Light Rail and Wynyard Master Plan: modelling to estimate likely demand for each project. • Sydney CBD shuttle service customer surveys and passenger counts: On-board customer surveys and passenger counts collected information about trip characteristics and customer profiles to inform service reviews. Publications and statistical products • 2011 Transport Customer Survey, Customer Satisfaction with Public Transport Services Papers to Australasian Transport Research Forum: • Extending the Sydney Strategic Model to represent toll road and park-and-ride choices • An empirical assessment of teleworking using Sydney Household Travel Survey data • Forecasting car ownership in the Sydney area • Prediction of vehicle kilometres travelled: A multilevel modelling approach • Detailed analysis of the travel patterns of rail users in Sydney. • Strategic Travel Model (STM) – TfNSW continued to improve STM as part of better meeting customer needs. The work involved updating parameters to separately model park and ride, kiss and ride access, and bus and walk modes to rail. • Population Segmentation Forecasting Model – Forecasting models were developed to inform the STM. This allows long-term small area population forecasts to be segmented by selected sociodemographic characteristics. • 2009/10 Household Travel Survey Summary Report, released in 2011 • 2010/11 Household Travel Survey – Key Indicators for Sydney, released in 2012 • Detailed tables and graphs from the 2010/11 Household Travel Survey • Summary transport statistics by Local Government Area.
