Labour Productivity an Overview
→ Jamaica’s low labour productivity does not lend to any
simplistic understanding, such as laziness of workers, low
levels of investments, governmental bureaucracy, etc., as
often proffered.
→ Rather, labour productivity is affected by a mix of factors;
→ some historically grounded,
→ some due to lack of leadership and enlightened
management
→ Some to lethargy and lack of motivation, stemming
largely from workers, to paraphrase BUJU Banton,
“not ruling their destiny”,
→ And some, subsuming some of the issues above,
relate to a poorly structured and inefficient labour
market.
