Instructor: Judi Nichols, L.C.S.W. a School Social Worker for the<br />

<strong>Rock</strong>ford Public Schools for over 20 years <strong>and</strong> a local volunteer with<br />

the Medical Reserve Corps, was selected by the National Association<br />

of County <strong>and</strong> City Health Officials to attend the PFA Medical Reserve<br />

Corps. Facilitator’s Training in Denver, Colorado last March. This<br />

course is co-sponsored with the Winnebago County Medical Reserve<br />

Corps <strong>and</strong> with the Janet Wattles Center.<br />

Psychological First Aid<br />

This course is an evidence-informed intervention for assisting children,<br />

adults, <strong>and</strong> families in the early aftermath of disaster <strong>and</strong> terrorism. It is<br />

designed to reduce the initial distress caused by disasters <strong>and</strong> to foster<br />

short <strong>and</strong> long term adaptive functioning. Participants will actively learn<br />

<strong>and</strong> practice skills needed for effective delivery of PFA. PFA is intended<br />

not only for the mental health <strong>professional</strong>, but also for a wide range<br />

of disaster response workers who provide early assistance to survivors.<br />

PFA providers may be imbedded in a variety of response units, such as<br />

first responder teams, primary <strong>and</strong> emergency health care teams, school<br />

crisis response teams, faith-based organizations, <strong>and</strong> other disaster<br />

relief agencies <strong>and</strong> organizations. 6 CEU’s for Social Workers <strong>and</strong> 6<br />

CPDU’s awarded for this class. Students should plan to arrive by 8:15 am<br />

to complete registration for CEUs. One-half hour lunch break on own.<br />
