Dental Assisting Program<br />

(6 Credits) This 60-hour Dental Assisting Program has been endorsed<br />

by the Winnebago County Dental Society <strong>and</strong> prepares students for<br />

entry-level positions in one of the fastest growing health care positions<br />

– Dental Assisting. This course covers the history of dentistry <strong>and</strong> dental<br />

assisting; introduction to the dental office; the legal aspects of dentistry<br />

<strong>and</strong> dental assisting; state dental practice; policies <strong>and</strong> guidelines; an<br />

introduction to oral anatomy; equipment, operation, <strong>and</strong> maintenance; introduction<br />

to tooth structure; the oral cavity <strong>and</strong> related structures; proper<br />

patient positioning; dental anesthesia; sterilization <strong>and</strong> other areas. Students<br />

will be given the opportunity to participate in a two-week rotation/<br />

clinical at a local dentist’s office. All materials <strong>and</strong> student insurance<br />

are included in the course cost. Please note: Most employers prefer that<br />

dental assistants <strong>and</strong> aides have a high school diploma or equivalent.<br />

This program does not include a national or state certification objective<br />

which in most states requires 1 to 2 years of training or <strong>education</strong>. CPR<br />

Physical Therapy Aide Program<br />

(3 Credits) This comprehensive 50-hour program prepares students for<br />

the growing field of Physical Therapy. The Physical Therapy Aide is<br />

generally responsible for carrying out the non-technical duties of physical<br />

therapy, such as preparing treatment areas, ordering devices <strong>and</strong><br />

supplies, <strong>and</strong> transporting patients working under the direction of the<br />

physical therapist. Furthermore, these workers assist physical therapists<br />

in providing services that help improve mobility, relieve pain, <strong>and</strong> prevent<br />

or limit permanent physical disabilities of patients suffering from injuries<br />

or disease. Physical Therapy Aides may be employed in nursing homes,<br />

hospitals, sports rehabilitation center <strong>and</strong> some orthopedic clinics. NOTE:<br />

This program does not include a national or state certification as part of its<br />

overall objectives. There is no job placement for this course. All materials<br />

Medical Billing <strong>and</strong> Coding Program<br />

(5 Credits) This combined 80 hour billing <strong>and</strong> coding course offers the<br />

skills needed to solve insurance billing problems, how to manually file<br />

claims (using the CPT <strong>and</strong> ICD-9 manual), complete common insurance<br />

forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims <strong>and</strong> use generic<br />

forms to streamline billing procedures. The course covers the following<br />

areas: CPT (Introduction, Guidelines, Evaluation <strong>and</strong> Management),<br />

specialty fields (such as surgery, radiology <strong>and</strong> laboratory), ICD-9<br />

(Introduction <strong>and</strong> Guidelines) <strong>and</strong> basic claims processes for medical<br />

insurance <strong>and</strong> third party reimbursements. Students will learn how to<br />

find the service <strong>and</strong> codes using manuals, (CPT, ICD-9 <strong>and</strong> HCPCS). After<br />

obtaining the practical work experience (6 months to 2 years), students<br />

who complete this course may be qualified to sit for the American Academy<br />

of Professional Coders (AAPC) - Certified Professional Coder Exam<br />

(CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association<br />

Certification Program<br />

(3 Credits) This comprehensive 50 hour program prepares students to<br />

function as EKG Technicians <strong>and</strong> to take the ASPT – Electrocardiograph<br />

(EKG) Technician exam <strong>and</strong> other National Certification Exams. This<br />

course will include important practice <strong>and</strong> background information on<br />

anatomy of the heart <strong>and</strong> physiology, medical disease processes, medical<br />

terminology, medical ethics, legal aspects of patient contact, laboratory<br />

assisting, electrocardiography <strong>and</strong> echocardiography. Additionally,<br />

students will practice with equipment <strong>and</strong> perform h<strong>and</strong>s on labs including<br />

introduction to the function <strong>and</strong> proper use of the EKG machine, the<br />

normal anatomy of the chest wall for proper lead placement, 12-lead<br />

placement <strong>and</strong> other clinical practices. The ASPT-Electrocardiograph<br />

Technician exam will be given following the completion of this course for<br />

an additional charge. All materials <strong>and</strong> student insurance are included<br />

Pharmacy Technician Program<br />

(3 Credits) This comprehensive 50-hour course will prepare students to<br />

enter the pharmacy field <strong>and</strong> to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification<br />

Board’s PTCB exam. Technicians work in hospitals, home infusion<br />

pharmacies, <strong>community</strong> pharmacies <strong>and</strong> other health care settings<br />

- working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. Course<br />

content includes medical terminology specific to the pharmacy, reading<br />

<strong>and</strong> interpreting prescriptions <strong>and</strong> defining drugs by generic <strong>and</strong> br<strong>and</strong><br />

names. Students will learn dosage calculations, I.V. flow rates, drug<br />

compounding, dose conversions, dispensing of prescriptions, inventory<br />

control <strong>and</strong> billing <strong>and</strong> reimbursement. Recommended: Students should<br />

have taken math <strong>and</strong> science in high school. A high school diploma<br />

or GED is required to sit for the PTCB exam. All materials <strong>and</strong> student<br />

Overview Session<br />

Polysomnography is the study of an individual’s sleep. Millions<br />

of Americans suffer from sleep disorders. Over 80 types of sleep<br />

disorders are recognized by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine<br />

(AASM). Growth in the number of sleep laboratories supports an<br />

increasing dem<strong>and</strong> for trained <strong>professional</strong>s. If you are interested<br />

Boot Camp Basic Training for the<br />

Sleep Technician<br />

(5 Credits) This program offers 80 hours of didactic training recommended<br />

by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM).<br />

Participants will develop the skills to collect a quality sleep study with<br />

an introduction to polysomnography scoring procedures. They will<br />

achieve the essentials necessary, as set forth by the AASM’s 29 st<strong>and</strong>ards<br />

of achievement, to promote an underst<strong>and</strong>ing of basic principles<br />

of polysomnography & the role of the sleep technician. Topics include<br />

abnormal sleep patterns, collecting an EEG signal, sleep staging,<br />

respiratory events, & medications. Participants will emerge highly<br />

prepared for their <strong>professional</strong> positions as sleep technicians. Tuition<br />

fee includes student liability coverage & cost of the study manual.<br />

Additional fees for AASM exam ($50) & 14 modules at $30 each<br />

completed in the following 18 months are not included in the cost of<br />
