GED AND READING CLASSES<br />

IN ENGLISH<br />

To be eligible for classes, students must be at least 17 years<br />

of age <strong>and</strong> not enrolled in high school. Students 17 or 18 <strong>and</strong><br />

whose class has not graduated must provide an official letter<br />

from their high school stating their “withdrawal date” to be<br />

eligible for classes. There are no tuition costs. Books are sold<br />

at the first class or are available to use in the classroom at no<br />

cost. Classes are self-paced with individualized instruction.<br />

Additional class information will be provided at an<br />

orientation session.<br />

How to enroll in FREE GED classes<br />

– English <strong>and</strong> Spanish speaking:<br />

1. You must attend ONE of the testing sessions listed<br />

<strong>and</strong> arrive on time. Do not bring children. You may test at<br />

any site. Late arrivals will not be admitted.<br />

2. You will complete an application <strong>and</strong> take a timed reading<br />

placement test. Testing will last about 2 hours.<br />

3. After the test, you will sign up to attend a required<br />

orientation session. At the orientation you will learn class<br />

policies <strong>and</strong> rules, learn about student services available<br />

to you at <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> College <strong>and</strong> be given your class<br />

start date, time <strong>and</strong> location. Most classes begin the<br />

week of August 29, 2011.<br />

4. Class sizes may be limited. Students will be enrolled on<br />

a first-come, first-served basis. For best selection attend<br />

an early testing date. If a testing session is full, you will<br />

be guaranteed a place at the next testing session.<br />

GED EN ESPAÑOL<br />

Como matricular en las clases de GED:<br />

1. Es necesario asistir a UNA de las sesiones de exámenes<br />

en la lista de la pagina anterior y llegar a esta sesión<br />

a tiempo. Usted puede hacer el examen en varios lugares.<br />

NO lleve niños, por favor. SI LLEGA TARDE, NO SERÁ<br />

ADMITIDO AL EXAMEN.<br />

2. Usted llenará una aplicación y tomará un examen de<br />

lectura con limite de tiempo para determinar su nivel de<br />

lectura en español. Este examen tomará aproximadamente<br />

2 horas.<br />

3. Depués del examen, usted tiene que matricularse para<br />

asistir a una sesión de orientación. Es un requisito tomar<br />

esta sesión. En la orientación, aprenderá las políticas de<br />

clase y reglas, también aprenderá todos los servicios que<br />

están disponibles para usted en el Colegio de <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong>.<br />

También recibirá la fecha en la que empezarán sus<br />

clases, así como la hora y la ubicación. La mayoría de las<br />

clases empezarán la semana del 29 de agosto del 2011.<br />

4. El cupo de las clases es limitado. La matricula tiene<br />

como base la primera persona que este presente y<br />

subsequentemente las demas personas. Llegue temprano<br />

para tener mejores opciones y elegir las clases que mejor<br />

le acomoden. Si una sesión esta llena, usted tiene la<br />

MORE GED COURSE OPTIONS<br />

GED ONLINE is a course for students who want to prepare<br />

for the GED exam using instruction through the Internet on<br />

their own time. Students must have competent computer<br />

skills, access to the Internet <strong>and</strong> an email address. Students<br />

are required to first pre-register <strong>and</strong> then attend one 3-hour<br />

enrollment session with the instructor. Students must read at<br />

a 9th grade level or higher to be eligible for this class. There<br />

is no cost for this class. Go to the following RVC web page to<br />

GED FOR COLLEGE is an 8-week intensive course for<br />

motivated students who plan on taking college level courses.<br />

This is a structured course in which students must keep pace<br />

with the lessons scheduled by their instructor. Students must<br />

read at a 9th grade level or higher to enroll in this class. The<br />

cost for this course is $132, which includes the $50 test fee<br />

<strong>and</strong> $25 book fee. These classes are held at the RVC Main<br />

VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED<br />

<strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> College Adult Education is in need of volunteer<br />

tutors for the GED <strong>and</strong> English as a Second Language classes.<br />

Volunteers are asked to participate in 8 hours of training <strong>and</strong><br />

tutor two hours a week at various <strong>community</strong> sites.<br />

PUBLIC GED CLASS LOCATIONS & TIMES<br />

TDL “CAREER EXPRESS” BRIDGE PROGRAM<br />

The TDL Career Express Bridge program will assist you<br />

in preparing for your GED while developing an increased<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the TDL (Transportation, Distribution, &<br />

Logistics) industry. Basic skills in reading, writing, math, <strong>and</strong><br />

computers will be covered while exploring TDL-related career<br />

opportunities, as well as job requirements <strong>and</strong> employer<br />

expectations for TDL employment. Students completing the<br />

course will be awarded a certificate of completion for the<br />

Adult Education TDL Bridge Program.<br />

“GED TO CAREERS” PROGRAM<br />

Find out about our “GED to Careers” youth program for<br />

17-21 year old individuals.* This WIA Out-of-School Youth<br />

grant funded program will help you to join the workforce by<br />

completing your GED, exploring careers, taking career training<br />

courses at <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> College, <strong>and</strong> obtaining jobs. Classes<br />

will be at the RVC Stenstrom Center or in Belvidere. Students<br />

must meet income <strong>and</strong> skill level eligibility requirements in<br />

order to be considered for enrollment into this program.<br />

GED TESTING INFORMATION<br />

GED testing information is available through the Regional<br />

Office of Education at 815-636-3060. Adults 17 years of<br />

age <strong>and</strong> older should call for testing requirements. Eligible<br />

persons may test without taking classes.<br />
