GED AND READING CLASSES
IN ENGLISH
To be eligible for classes, students must be at least 17 years
of age and not enrolled in high school. Students 17 or 18 and
whose class has not graduated must provide an official letter
from their high school stating their “withdrawal date” to be
eligible for classes. There are no tuition costs. Books are sold
at the first class or are available to use in the classroom at no
cost. Classes are self-paced with individualized instruction.
Additional class information will be provided at an
orientation session.
How to enroll in FREE GED classes
– English and Spanish speaking:
1. You must attend ONE of the testing sessions listed
and arrive on time. Do not bring children. You may test at
any site. Late arrivals will not be admitted.
2. You will complete an application and take a timed reading
placement test. Testing will last about 2 hours.
3. After the test, you will sign up to attend a required
orientation session. At the orientation you will learn class
policies and rules, learn about student services available
to you at Rock Valley College and be given your class
start date, time and location. Most classes begin the
week of August 29, 2011.
4. Class sizes may be limited. Students will be enrolled on
a first-come, first-served basis. For best selection attend
an early testing date. If a testing session is full, you will
be guaranteed a place at the next testing session.

Como matricular en las clases de GED:
1. Es necesario asistir a UNA de las sesiones de exámenes
en la lista de la pagina anterior y llegar a esta sesión
a tiempo. Usted puede hacer el examen en varios lugares.
NO lleve niños, por favor. SI LLEGA TARDE, NO SERÁ
ADMITIDO AL EXAMEN.
2. Usted llenará una aplicación y tomará un examen de
lectura con limite de tiempo para determinar su nivel de
lectura en español. Este examen tomará aproximadamente
2 horas.
3. Depués del examen, usted tiene que matricularse para
asistir a una sesión de orientación. Es un requisito tomar
esta sesión. En la orientación, aprenderá las políticas de
clase y reglas, también aprenderá todos los servicios que
están disponibles para usted en el Colegio de Rock Valley.
También recibirá la fecha en la que empezarán sus
clases, así como la hora y la ubicación. La mayoría de las
clases empezarán la semana del 29 de agosto del 2011.
4. El cupo de las clases es limitado. La matricula tiene
como base la primera persona que este presente y
subsequentemente las demas personas. Llegue temprano
para tener mejores opciones y elegir las clases que mejor
le acomoden. Si una sesión esta llena, usted tiene la
arantia de tener su lugar en la siguiente sesión de
los examenes.

MORE GED COURSE OPTIONS
GED ONLINE is a course for students who want to prepare
for the GED exam using instruction through the Internet on
their own time. Students must have competent computer
skills, access to the Internet and an email address. Students
are required to first pre-register and then attend one 3-hour
enrollment session with the instructor. Students must read at
a 9th grade level or higher to be eligible for this class. There
is no cost for this class. Go to the following RVC web page to

GED FOR COLLEGE is an 8-week intensive course for
motivated students who plan on taking college level courses.
This is a structured course in which students must keep pace
with the lessons scheduled by their instructor. Students must
read at a 9th grade level or higher to enroll in this class. The
cost for this course is $132, which includes the $50 test fee
and $25 book fee. These classes are held at the RVC Main

VOLUNTEER TUTORS NEEDED
Rock Valley College Adult Education is in need of volunteer
tutors for the GED and English as a Second Language classes.
Volunteers are asked to participate in 8 hours of training and
tutor two hours a week at various community sites.

PUBLIC GED CLASS LOCATIONS & TIMES
TDL “CAREER EXPRESS” BRIDGE PROGRAM
The TDL Career Express Bridge program will assist you
in preparing for your GED while developing an increased
understanding of the TDL (Transportation, Distribution, &
Logistics) industry. Basic skills in reading, writing, math, and
computers will be covered while exploring TDL-related career
opportunities, as well as job requirements and employer
expectations for TDL employment. Students completing the
course will be awarded a certificate of completion for the
Adult Education TDL Bridge Program.

“GED TO CAREERS” PROGRAM
Find out about our “GED to Careers” youth program for
17-21 year old individuals.* This WIA Out-of-School Youth
grant funded program will help you to join the workforce by
completing your GED, exploring careers, taking career training
courses at Rock Valley College, and obtaining jobs. Classes
will be at the RVC Stenstrom Center or in Belvidere. Students
must meet income and skill level eligibility requirements in
order to be considered for enrollment into this program.

GED TESTING INFORMATION
GED testing information is available through the Regional
Office of Education at 815-636-3060. Adults 17 years of
age and older should call for testing requirements. Eligible
persons may test without taking classes.
