Nursing Assistant
This program is for currently certified nursing assistants and is a
joint offering from Rock Valley College’s Allied Health Division and
the Continuing Professional Education Department. Courses in this
offering are designed to provide CNA’s the opportunity to acquire
skills and competencies needed for employment in emerging health
systems. Courses may be taken individually or in a series. PREREQUI-
SITE: Currently certified CNA. Please bring a photocopy of your CNA
certificate to the first class. It is recommended that you have three
months of work experience as a CNA. The textbook for Advanced
Skills, Basic EKG, Phlebotomy and Basic Respiratory Care (same text
for all) must be purchased before the first class. Classes will be held
at the Stenstrom Center for Career Education, 4151 Samuelson Road
(35th and Samuelson Rd.—East of Jefferson High School unless
otherwise noted).
Phlebotomy Skills for CNAs
(1 Credit) This course is designed to prepare the student in routine
phlebotomy procedures. Venipuncture techniques, phlebotomy equipment,
micropuncture, safe practices and medicolegal aspects are
studied. This course does not make one a Phlebotomist, it is strictly
continuing education for currently certified CNAs. A Certificate of
Completion is awarded upon completion. Students must attend all 4
sessions to complete this course successfully. PREREQUISITE: Currently

basic respiratory care procedures. Emphasis is placed on gas therapy,
cylinders and regulators, incentive spirometry, pulse oximetry,

Recertification for CNAs
If your CNA Certification has lapsed for 24 or more months, you may
be eligible to recertify.
Steps to Recertification:
– Contact the State of Illinois at (217) 785-5133 and register
with the state registry.
– Upon receipt of the packet, complete the Criminal Background
Check and return to the State of Illinois.
– Upon successful completion of the Criminal Background Check
call RVC at (815) 921-3900 for information on how to proceed
and for upcoming recertification dates.
Cost for Recertification: $199 (must be paid at the time of registration)

Healthcare Provider – CPR
This course is provided for students who do not have a current healthcare
provider CPR card and are registered in one of the healthcare
courses: EKG Technician, Ophthalmic Medical Assistant or Massage
Therapy. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a
two-year certification in CPR through the American Heart Association.
Tuition includes cost of pocket mask (required). Optional text sold at
class for approx. $15. You must bring your registration slip with you
to class.
Instructor: Ruth Kormanak, EMT-P is an American Heart Association
BLS CPR Instructor. She has been involved in Pre-hospital care of
twenty years. She currently tutors and teaches in Emergency Medical

Medical Administrative
Assistant Program
(4.5 Credits) This 70-hour course prepares students to function
effectively in many of the administrative and clerical positions in
the healthcare industry. Administrative Medical Assistants, Medial
Secretary, Medical Records Clerk, and Health Unit Coordinators are all
positions in great demand. This program covers important entry-level
background information on anatomy and physiology, medical terminology,
insurance billing and coding, medical ethics, customer service
and legal aspects. This program is intended to provide students with a
well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student
can gain the necessary skills required - to either obtain or advance to
a healthcare administration position. NOTE: This program is designed
to meet the requirements of the National Healthcare Association’s
(NHA)-Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national
certification exam. The CMAA exam will be given following the
completion of this course for an additional charge – approx. $105. All
