This program is for currently certified nursing assistants <strong>and</strong> is a<br />

joint offering from <strong>Rock</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> College’s Allied Health Division <strong>and</strong><br />

the Continuing Professional Education Department. Courses in this<br />

offering are designed to provide CNA’s the opportunity to acquire<br />

skills <strong>and</strong> competencies needed for employment in emerging health<br />

systems. Courses may be taken individually or in a series. PREREQUI-<br />

SITE: Currently certified CNA. Please bring a photocopy of your CNA<br />

certificate to the first class. It is recommended that you have three<br />

months of work experience as a CNA. The textbook for Advanced<br />

Skills, Basic EKG, Phlebotomy <strong>and</strong> Basic Respiratory Care (same text<br />

for all) must be purchased before the first class. Classes will be held<br />

at the Stenstrom Center for Career Education, 4151 Samuelson Road<br />

(35th <strong>and</strong> Samuelson Rd.—East of Jefferson High School unless<br />

otherwise noted).<br />

Phlebotomy Skills for CNAs<br />

(1 Credit) This course is designed to prepare the student in routine<br />

phlebotomy procedures. Venipuncture techniques, phlebotomy equipment,<br />

micropuncture, safe practices <strong>and</strong> medicolegal aspects are<br />

studied. This course does not make one a Phlebotomist, it is strictly<br />

<strong>continuing</strong> <strong>education</strong> for currently certified CNAs. A Certificate of<br />

Completion is awarded upon completion. Students must attend all 4<br />

sessions to complete this course successfully. PREREQUISITE: Currently<br />

be eligible to recertify.<br />

Steps to Recertification:<br />

– Contact the State of Illinois at (217) 785-5133 <strong>and</strong> register<br />

with the state registry.<br />

– Upon receipt of the packet, complete the Criminal Background<br />

Check <strong>and</strong> return to the State of Illinois.<br />

– Upon successful completion of the Criminal Background Check<br />

call RVC at (815) 921-3900 for information on how to proceed<br />

<strong>and</strong> for upcoming recertification dates.<br />

Healthcare Provider – CPR<br />

This course is provided for students who do not have a current healthcare<br />

provider CPR card <strong>and</strong> are registered in one of the healthcare<br />

courses: EKG Technician, Ophthalmic Medical Assistant or Massage<br />

Therapy. Upon successful completion of this course, you will receive a<br />

two-year certification in CPR through the American Heart Association.<br />

Tuition includes cost of pocket mask (required). Optional text sold at<br />

(4.5 Credits) This 70-hour course prepares students to function<br />

effectively in many of the administrative <strong>and</strong> clerical positions in<br />

the healthcare industry. Administrative Medical Assistants, Medial<br />

Secretary, Medical Records Clerk, <strong>and</strong> Health Unit Coordinators are all<br />

positions in great dem<strong>and</strong>. This program covers important entry-level<br />

background information on anatomy <strong>and</strong> physiology, medical terminology,<br />

insurance billing <strong>and</strong> coding, medical ethics, customer service<br />

<strong>and</strong> legal aspects. This program is intended to provide students with a<br />

well-rounded introduction to medical administration so that a student<br />

can gain the necessary skills required - to either obtain or advance to<br />

a healthcare administration position. NOTE: This program is designed<br />

to meet the requirements of the National Healthcare Association’s<br />

(NHA)-Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) national<br />

certification exam. The CMAA exam will be given following the<br />
