Call (815) 921-3900 Fall 2011 53 EMERGENCY SECURITY TRAINING / HEALTH CARE CAREER TRAINING EMERGENCY SECURITY TRAINING Homeland Security Terrorism Prevention Certificate for Law Enforcement or Fire Service Professionals –On-Line Course. Rock Valley College and the Institute for Preventive Strategies, a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Training Partner, are collaborating to deliver the Homeland Security Terrorism Prevention Certificate Course for Law Enforcement Professionals (PER-280) and Fire Service Professionals--DHS Certified Courses. These eight-hour web-based courses take a unique approach that engages learners in an online simulation, forcing them to make real life decisions. The “game” like Introductory Exercise allows the Law Enforcement Officer or the Firefighter to experience the eminent threat of a terrorist attack first hand through a series of choices leading to a related and reasonable conclusion. Topics include: collaboration, information sharing, recognizing threats, managing risks, and deciding to intervene. This program is offered at no charge for those working in the Law Enforcement and Security professions or Firefighters, and is designed to conveniently fit your busy schedule. Midwest Area Firefighter Academy September 16 – 18, 2011 The Midwest Area Firefighter Academy will be hosted by Rock Valley College and the Blackhawk Firefighter’s Association on September 16, 17 and 18. The Academy will provide a learning experience for all Fire and Emergency Services personnel. Opening ceremonies will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, September 16th at the Rock Valley Physical Education Center. Classroom sessions will be held at the RVC Main Campus and field sessions will be held at satellite sites located at Byron Fire Department, Cherry Valley Fire Protection District, and Harlem Roscoe Fire Protection District. The Midwest Area Fire Academy’s mission is to promote firefighter safety through quality education, leadership development, and course delivery. Our training focus is on the needs and changing responsibilities of the emergency response services. Training will incorporate current instructional and training methods to our students by utilizing today’s fire service information, performance standards, and modern technology. Enrollment requires a recommendation of the health care facility administrator and a registered dietitian. Students will have a total of 120 hours of classroom instruction and 162 hours of practical, on-the-job experience (50 of these hours must be spent one-on-one with a registered dietitian). The complete course continues for 42 weeks, three sessions in August to June. Completion of the three sessions, Management of Food Service Operations, Medical Nutrition Therapy and Food Safety & Human Resource Management meets the state requirements for dietary managers in Health care facilities and Dietary managers Association (DMA). Students will be required to actively participate as both rescuers and victims in skills practice during psychomotor labs. Students will also be required to pass written and practical skills examinations and participate in ambulance/hospital clinical experiences to become eligible to sit for the National Registry of the Emergency Medical Technicians examination.
