. ADDS : LETTERS For United and Alert To BOXOFFICE: Exhibitor Front Unless all Independent theatre owners unite and become extremely alert, the film distributors who are well organized and alert are going to move in and practically run your theatre for you. All we have to do is refer occasionally to the consent decree and have a good lawyer represent us. You are now being policed by a super organization called Wilmark, blind-checking you constantly and using a national average for drive-in theatres, which they claim is the national average per car. They are operating over state lines and should be regulated by our federal officials, because it is nothing less than espionage of your business by an outside agent who has nothing to do with the film company you do business with. You do not know who, or how many people, are told your grosses daily. If the film company wants to check their percentage feature, they should check you on your front by a duly identified agent or employee and, in this manner, your gross will have some semblance of secrecy. They will know how many passes are issued for the engagement and will not count your car or your employees or yourself every time you enter your theatre or drive-in. Paramount now is telling you that you can have only two per cent passes. However, all successful theatres issue passes for good public relations and for other reasons and no sensible exhibitor is going to give passes, unless it helps his business, and Paramount, certainly, will cash in on this business, just as much as will the exhibitor. Allied was doing a wonderful job of keeping the distributors from hurting the weak ones in our business, and some of the strong ones, too, but Allied seems to have "gone weak" lately. Let's all get together nationally and see if we cannot go to our distributors and work out something for the real benefit of the whole industry and stop trying to cut each others' throats. We certainly have enough brains in our industry to do things right. Marrero Drive-In Theatre Marrero, La. WILLIAM SHIELL, JR. Sign Sybil Thomdike LONDON—Dame Sybil Thomdike has been signed by S. P.
