UA Renews Bank Pact
To Aid Its Producers
NEW YORK—United Artists has greatly
increased its prestige in the independent distribution
field through an agreement just
reached with the Chemical Bank & Trust Co.
This provides that producers releasing through
UA may receive first-money loans from the
bank under certain conditions.
UA can continue, as in the past, to recommend
that the bank give financial assistance
to producers which will utilize its distribution
facilities. But that is far from the whole story.
Independent producers seeking financing
directly from the bank will be referred to UA
for appraisals of their product. If UA recom-
mends that it be given consideration, the
bank will then negotiate directly with the producers.
In other words, the bank will place
considerable reliance on UA judgment.
The agreement became known when Arthur
B. Krim, UA president, said an agreement had
been reached with Chemical calling for the
primary financing of the pictures, and that
plans called for their release late in 1953
and in 1954. It was closed by Robert S. Benjamin,
Seymour M. Peyser and Krim for UA
and by Edward Van Pelt and Milton Gettinger
for the bank.
Van Pelt said Monday (10) that Chemical
has had a "very happy association" with UA
and called the agreement an "endorsement"
by the bank of UA operations. He said that
last year Chemical financed ten pictures for
UA release.
In the past, the bank has been asked to
pass on money package deals. It will now
lessen its labors considerably by referring
such requests to UA.
Several years ago, Gradwell Sears realized
the importance of encouraging independent
production by aiding with financing and tried
to discover sources of supply. Now UA is succeeding
in finding financing and, in addition,
has gained additional control over production.
The agreement has no effect on or relationship
to a revolving fund of $2,000,000 supplied
by the Heller Co. of Chicago, UA said, but
insures additional funds for independent production
and encourages independent producer
distribution tieups with UA.
No information was furnished by either
UA or Chemical as to the amount of money
involved in the ten-picture agreement.
At about the same time that UA and Chemical
reached agreement, UA Pictures Corp.
was incorporated at Albany, N. Y. That also
is a separate proposition, set up to handle
payment of salaries to stars engaged in Anglo-
American production.
