MIAMI
The opening of
Wometco-WTVJ's new studio
featured a cocktail party for tne press
and a tour of the studio. Among the hosts,
besides owners Mitchell Wolfson and Sidney
Meyer, were General Manager Lee Ruwitch;
publicity director Bert Toppan; Mark Chartrand,
public relations executive, and Sonny
Shepherd, managing director of the Carib,
Miami's first house equipped for thea're television.
Shepherd was kept busy escorting
guests in fiont of cameras which in turn
gave them the chance to see them.':elves on
TV. A few oldtimers heave sighs of regret
at the passing of the old Capitol Theatre,
gazing nostalgically at a few rows of seats
in the topmost balcony of the theatre—all
that remained to remind them of Wometco's
first local theatre.
The circus committee of
the Variety Children's
hospital has opened 12 offices for the
sales of tickets to the Ringling Bros., Barnum
& Bailey shows November 21-23. Women
workers for the project are manning the
ticket booths placed in strategic locations in
the area. All parking revenue, plus a percentage
of the admissions, goes into the local
fund.
The downtown State, a Wometco house and
one of the oldest theatres in the area, goes
into its final week of operation. According
to Mark Chartrand of the Wometco circuit
lack of business or inroads of television has
nothing whatever to do with the theatre's
demise. The owner, who leased the building
to the circuit, plans to tear it down to make
way for new offices and stores. The State,
according to Chartrand. has made money ever
since it was acquired about 15 years ago. It
was built in 1920 and was once called the
Fotosho. During the last years it has followed
a stunt policy, and all kinds of goingson
have been noted as ballyhoo, from a South
Sea island dancer on the sidewalk to a man
parading in a prisoner's uniform.
John Cunningham, who continues as manager
of the 27th Avenue Drive-In, operated
the State at one time. Cunningham tagged it
the State instead of the Fotosho in 1930. It
was also once owned by Paramount, but had
been under Wometco's banner since 1936. It
saw the premiere of "City Lights," "Strike
Me Pink" and "House of Rothschild."
The finals in the "Mario Lanza of Miami"
contest are due on stage at the Florida in a
few days. Semifinals are scheduled for the
Sheridan. "Because You're Mine" has been
running at both these houses. Auditions were
held at four radio stations, one program at
each station selecting the young singer, all
amateurs, whom it wished to .sponsor. Director
of each of these programs will appear on
stage at the Florida at the finals and the winner
will be chosen by audience applause. A
tape recording of his singing and a photograph
will be sent to the Hollywood and New
York MGM record companies and film studios.
A $50 war bond will also be given
the wirmer and a similar bond will go to t
sponsor.
