—
The EXHIBITOR HAS HIS SAY
(Continued from preceding page)
jr., Eddie Foy jr. Here is a real slapstick
picture which most people thought was corny.
As for myself, I enjoyed it and it did draw
fair crowds. Played Mon., Tues., Wed.
Weather; Cold.—Tom Hetherington, Musicland
Theatre, Kaslo, B. C. Small-town patronage.
North of the Great Divide (Rep)—Roy
Rogers, Penny Edwards, Gordon Jones. I kicked
this one around for a long time and finally
played it to get rid of it. Single billed it with
a lot of shorts and was surprised that we had
normal business. The kids really go for Rogers
yet, but it takes a lot of kids to pay the freight
—especially at 20 cents a head. Played Fri.,
Sat. Weather: Fine.—Howard L. Scott, Nyah
Theatre, Hot Springs, Mont. Small-town and
rural patronage.
Wild Blue Yonder, The (Rep)—Wendell
Corey, Vera Ralston, Forrest Tucker. Did not
see this myself, but it drew and was well
received. Good comments. Played Wed.
Weather: Nice.—Marcella Smith, Vinton Theatre,
McArthur, Ohio. Small-town patronage.
20th CENTURY-FOX
Day the Earth Stood StiU, The (20th-Fox
—Michael Rermie, Patricia Neal, Hugh Marlowe.
A real, tingling drama. Far fetched or
—is it possible? The title and trailer spoiled
our crowd but those who attended enjoyed
it. Not recommended to make money on.
Played Mon., Tues. Weather: Fair and Cool.
—C. E. McMurchy, Reston Memorial Theatre,
Reston, Manitoba. Small-town and rural
patronage.
Dreamboat (20th-Fox)—Clifton Webb, Ginger
Rogers, Anne Francis. There's a laugh
every three seconds. Comments were all
favorable yet we had the lowest Tuesday,
Wednesday, Thursday in some time. It's my
opinion that the title was wrong. Weather:
Cool.—Bill Myers, Rena Theatre, Kellogg,
Idaho. Mine-town patronage.
Elopement (20th-Fox)—Clifton Webb, Anne
Francis, WUliam Lundigan. A very cute picture.
A little below average business but it
was enjoyed by the patrons. Aime Francis
is a bright, new star. Played Sun., Mon.
Weather: Cold.—Mr. and Mrs. K. R. Altis,
Bunceton Theatre, Bunceton, Mo. Small-town
and rural patronage.
I'll Never Forget You (20th-Fox)—Tyrone
Power, Ann Blyth, Michael Rennie. Just read
the title. You will never forget it and your
customers will never forgive you. That is, if
you have any. Enough said. Played Tues.,
Wed. Weather: Cool.—Harold Bell, Opera
House Theatre, Coaticook, Que. Small-town
and rural patronage.
Kangaroo! (20th-Fox) — Maureen O'Hara,
Peter Lawford, Finlay Currie. A good enough
action picture but not worth what Fox
charged me for It. It doesn't show much of
the Australian scenery that most people expected
to see. Played Fri., Sat. Weather:
Good.—H. W. Long, Lans Theatre, Lansing,
Iowa. Small-town and rural patronage.
Pride of St. Louis (20th-Fox)—Dan Dailey,
Joanne Dru, Richard Hylton. Business above
average. Interest was high in baseball when
we played this one as our World Series special.
Local high school team had been playing
In a tournament so I invited them as
guests and staged a local pep meeting. Patrons
came and they liked what they saw. Played
Sun., Mon. Weather: Pleasant.—Dwight Hanson,
Valley Theatre, Eddyville, Iowa. Smalltown
and rural patronage.
Return of the Texan (20th-Pox) — Dale
Robertson, Joanne Dru, Walter Brennan. As
down-to-earth a picture as anyone would
ever hope to play. Not big, but real and
interesting. Business was normal and we received
a lot of very nice comments. An ideal
title, a good cast, a small-town natmral.
Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Rain and cool.
Ken Christiansen, Roxy Theatre, Washburn,
N. D. Small-town and rural patronage.
UNIVERSAL-INTERNATIONAL
Bend of the River (U-I)—James Stewart,
Arthur Kennedy, Julia Adams. We can't seem
to go wrong on a good western here—and this
one was good. People here will turn out better
for James Stewart in a western than for any
other type of picture. Business good.—Howard
L. Scott, Nyah Theatre, Hot Springs, Mont.
Small-town and rural patronage.
Cattle Drive (U-I) — Joel McCrea, Dean
Stockwell, Chill Wills. Two fathers told me
this was one of the best shows I'd had here in
five years. A school teacher told me that
Benefits From Nearby
City's Advertising
n TOMIC CITY, THE (Para) — We
played this picture before Dallas and
I so wish that we hadn't. Since we are
close to that city and we play films a
Uttle after they have them, we get the
benefit from their advertising. Sometimes
it isn't even necessary for us to do
any extra advertising. The stars in this
picture must have been new, because I
had never heard of them, but if there had
been some star names in it I am sure it
would have brought in better receipts.
Jerry B. Walden, Crest Theatre, Seagoville,
Tex.
every school teacher should see it as should
every father who has a son. I guess endorsements
like these are sufficient. I don't get
many such frank statements on a picture and
when I do they make me feel mighty good.—I.
Roche, Vernon Theatre, Vernon, Fla. Smalltown
and rural patronage.
Francis Goes to West Point (TJ-D—Donald
O'Connor, Lori Nelson, Alice Kelley. A nice
little picture that did all right here. I don't
think anyone can go wrong in, or near, a
small town with this type of show. However,
this was not as good as the others of the
series. Played Sun., Mon. Weather: Just
right.—Kenneth Clem, Monocacy Drive-In
Theatre, Taneytown, Md. Rural patronage.
Ivory Hunter (U-I)—Anthony Steel, Dinah
Sheridan, Harold Warrender. This type of
picture may do very well in small towns but in
my particular situation it is no good. It didn't
even do average business for us. Our general
patronage appreciates comedy. Played Tues.,
Wed., Thurs. Weather: Fair and warm.—V. F.
Nichols, W. L. Rooks, Ritz Theatre, Snyder.
Tex. City and rural patronage.
Saddle Tramp (U-D—Joel McCrea, Wanda
Hendrix, John Russell. As one elderly lady
put it, "You'll miss something wonderful if
you don't see it." So, if you haven't shown
it, give your patrons a g(X)d movie. We used
it second run and did O. K. Played Sun.,
Mon. Weather: Cloudy and rain.—James
Wiggs jr.. Tar Theatre, Tarboro, N. C. Small
mill-town and rural patronage.
Steel Town (U-I) — Ann Sheridan, John
Lund, Howard Duff. Very exciting picture,
packed with suspense and action. Should
please the patrons in any situation. We did
fair business on this but the title does not do
the picture justice. This is a good one for a
weekend pickup. Sat. (prevue), Sun., Mon.,
Tues. Weather: Clear and cool.—V. F. Nichols,
W. L. Rooks, Palace Theatre, Snyder, Tex.
City and rural patronage.
WARNER BROS.
Big Jim McLain (AVB)—John Wayne, Na
Olson, James Arness. John Wayne—need
say more? His name on the marquee will bl
them in tlirough hell and high water. B
ness was good. The picture wasn't up to
usual Wayne action but there were no o
plaints. Played Tues., Wed., Thurs. Weatl
Good.—Bill Myers, Rena Theatre. Kell
Idaho. Mine-town patronage.
Carson City (WB)—Randolph Scott, Lui
Norman, Raymond Massey. Play it and ei v"
a swell little western. "Just the way the
WAS," one oldtimer told me. Business w^
good as expected. Played Tues., Wed. Weatl ;:
Rain one night.—Kenneth Clem, Monot^
Drive-In Theatre, Taneytown, Md. Rural i-
tronage.
Lion and the Horse, The (WB)—S -e (
Cochran, Ray Teal, Bob Steele. A sal
town picture. Above average business id ;
many favorable comments. We were part i-
larly interested in this one because we p
it in the making last September in U fu
Bad print. Played Fri., Sat. Weather: Ctl
—Mr. and Mrs. K. R. Altis, Bunceton Tt'vtre,
Bunceton, Mo. Small-town and r \]
patronage.
Room for One More (WB)—Cary Gr t,
Betsy Drake, Lurene Tuttle. Voted an exllent
comedy with Cary Grant more pop ir
than ever after his tactful handling of le
"facts of life" situation. Business exceUJ
Played Mon. to Sat. Weather: Too fml
C. G. Mangold, Royal Cinema, Cambriji
England. Family, county and university
,
tronage.
Starlift (WB)—Doris Day, Gordon Mad]
Virginia Mayo. I noticed in the exhibi)
reports that this picture did not go
too well in many communities, so I was
dubious about it. But I needn't have bl
It drew quite well considering the weathf
(censored) and was liked by all. I, person]
thought it was wonderful. Of course,
plot was thin, but for once a musical
the kind of songs which everybody knows
loves. I wish I could say which numb>|
liked the best but they were all so f|
that is impossible. I am going to see it a
tonight, which is something I seldom d'ilij
should think it would be good boxoffice ijhi|
where. Played Sun., Mon. Weather:
mentionable.—Marcella Smith, Vinton Til
tre, McArthur, Oliio. Small-town patroni
Story of WiU Rogers, The (WB)—Will I
ers jr., Jane Wyman, James Gleason. A»|
derful picture about a wonderful man,
own Will Rogers. My vocabulary is not ()
enough to say what I would like to aUl'
this picture. It will break every house re rd:;
and you will see people you have never !a
declared after seeing it that they Ilk*
very much. Maybe that's an angle we exl
tors could use to our advantage. Of ^
many I warned, only two decided no t*
purchase tickets.—C. J. Otts, Wakea T ^•
tre, Wa^kom, Tex. Small-town patronai
