/Chicago meetings were on the schedule for<br />
two branch managers last week. Paul<br />
Webster, Republic, attended a conference December<br />
6, and Byron Shapiro journeyed there<br />
the same weekend for Columbia meetings .<br />

Howard Pearl. UA, was in town working on<br />
promotion for "The Thief," which opened<br />
Thursday (11), and "The Ring." which had<br />
its Des Moines premiere December 12. Pearl<br />
has grown a beard a la Jose Ferrar's in<br />
"Moulin Rouge" and will soon be making TV<br />
and other appearances in connection with<br />
that picture . . . Joanne Hoffman, former<br />
Republic .secretary, was hospitalized for a<br />
tonsillectomy during a vacation from Iowa<br />
State Teachers college . . . Ronald Johnson,<br />
son of AA Manager Bill Johnson, is home<br />
from Texas on Christmas leave from the<br />
army. With his wife, he will spend several<br />
weeks with his parents here.<br />

Steve Ward, former Universal office manager,<br />
was in the exchange last week while<br />

visiting from his home in Denver .<br />
Engbertson, Decorah Theatre manager, is<br />
planning a new outdoor theatre which he<br />
hopes to have in operation next year . . . Lou<br />
Levy reports he has a limited quantity of stills<br />
available to exhibitors without cost on "Bend<br />
of the River," "Apache Pass," and "Flame of<br />
Araby."<br />
Dorothy Westbrook, Columbia secretary,<br />
won an automatic washing machine as a door<br />
prize for registering when she visited the new<br />
Katz Drug Store on its opening day . . . Jim<br />
Velde. UA sales manager from New York,<br />
spent tlvee days in the exchange here last<br />
week, and also visited many friends he made<br />
while Des Moines manager of Eagle Lion a<br />
few years ago.<br />

Northwest Vai'iety Club has re-elected all of<br />
its 1952 officers.<br />
Those who will serve another term are<br />

and George Granstrom, first and second assistant<br />
chief barkers; Sim Heller, doughguy,<br />

and Tom Burke, secretary.<br />
In addition to the officers, the 1953 crewmen<br />
