Theatre, put up a trophy which was presented<br />
on stage December 4 to the Perry<br />
Atoms, Pittsburgh junior football conference<br />

Cartoon carnivals, with 17 cartoons, have<br />
been profitable at many theatres. Now come<br />
exhibitors, Ike and Jake Silverman of the<br />
Blair at HoUidaysburg, who presented two<br />
cartoons with a feature and advertised the<br />
show as the Battle of the Cartoons. For<br />
some reason, this really paid off and Jake<br />
said that the Blair will try it again.<br />
H. F. Grelle Named Mgr.<br />
Of Pittsburgh State<br />
PITTSBURGH — Harry F. Grelle has<br />
been promoted to manager of the State<br />
Theatre on Fifth avenue downtown, succeeding<br />
Jack Simons, resigned. Grelle had<br />
been assistant manager for a number of<br />
years, taking this post under former manager<br />
Ray Wheeler, who is now in Cleveland.<br />
Simons, was the State manager for two<br />
years. The State Theatre and building are<br />
assets of the estate of the late James B.<br />
Clark, with Russ Wehrle supervising manager<br />
for the properties, including the Capitol<br />
in Braddock.<br />
Charles Holi Dies<br />
At Richwood, W. Va.<br />
RICHWOOD, W. VA.—Charles Holt, 82, one<br />
of West Virginia's pioneer exhibitors, died<br />
here last week (4). He had undergone a<br />
tumor operation last June. Holt, a native of<br />
Virginia, came to Nicholas county in a stage<br />
coach in 1897. and carried mail be*ween<br />
Gauley Bridge and Summersville. In 1907<br />
he opened Richwood's first nickelodeon, the<br />
Star. He would direct group singing and<br />
then crank the Powers No. 5 projector. The<br />
Star was rebuilt after a 1921 fire. A showman<br />
for 45 years, he remained active as<br />
assis;ant manager until last March. His son<br />
Wendell has been manager for a number of<br />
years.<br />
Surviving are his wife, sons Wendell and<br />
Robert, and a daughter, Mrs. Violet Evans,<br />
all of Richwood.<br />
Charley Holt's many years in the motion<br />
picture business "were full of fun," he had<br />
stated on various occasions. Five years ago<br />
Nicholas county residents celebrated his 40th<br />
anniversary in the entertainment industry.<br />
Ralph Harrison<br />
PITTSBURGH—Ralph J. Harrison, local<br />
musician and one of the original 11 organizers<br />
of the Variety Club, died last week. He was a<br />
nephew of the late Dave Broudy, who had<br />
teen conductor of the Warner and Stanley<br />
Theatre orchestras for a number of years.<br />
Harrison operated an entertainment agency<br />
here. Sm-viving are his wife Elizabeth, a<br />
daughter Dorothy, two sisters and a brother.<br />
Hazelwood at Pittsburgh<br />
To Reopen Xmas Day ,<br />
PITTSBURGH—The Hazelwood Theatre I<br />
here, completely remodeled and with new<br />
fixtures and equipment from projection booth<br />
to screen, is scheduled to reopen Christ- .<br />
mas day. Nat Cherkosly, local film trucker,<br />

and his nephew Nat Landy are proprietors.<br />
Alexander Theatre Supply furnished all<br />
new equipment. Features are RCA projection-soLind<br />
equipment, 830 American chairs,<br />
carpet, Synchro-Screen, Typhoon air conditioning<br />
and heating systems, revamped front<br />
in green porcelain with yellow and maroon-:<br />
trim, modern drapes, etc. A concre^o floor<br />
has been installed. The candy concession-,<br />
now has a street door w-ith a window opening<br />
into the theatre lobby.<br />
Earl Cherkosly, son of Nat Cherkosly, will<br />
be the manager. He is an experienced theatre:<br />
man, having been associated with the business<br />
since he was a youngster and later as aj<br />
Warner circuit house manager. He is an ex-f<br />
serviceman. Initial program will be a Christmas<br />
matinee for children and at 7 p. m. the<br />
theatre will open for adults.<br />
"Devil' to Pittsburgh<br />
PITTSBURGH — The three - dimensional<br />
picture, "Bwana Devil," will be presented<br />
here next month at the Warner Theatre.<br />
