HOY L.<br />
RUSSELL<br />
Holmes county Farmer-Hub from Ray and<br />
Cecils White, owners and publishers for the<br />
past 25 years. Associated with Judge Russell<br />
in the enterprise are the members of<br />
his family: Wilbur D. Cox, his son-in-law.<br />
editor; Barbara Russell Cox, news editor, and<br />
his wife, Mrs. Helen Smith Russell, business<br />
manager.<br />
The Holmes County Farmer-Hub was<br />
formed in 1926 with the consolidation of the<br />
Holmes County Farmer, founded in 1828, and<br />
the Holmes County Hub, founded in 1836.<br />
In assuming the post of editor and publisher<br />
of the newspaper, Judge Russell announced<br />
that he will continue the policy as<br />
an independent Democratic newspaper with<br />
no affiliation with any faction, group or<br />
organization.<br />
Judge Russell defeated a city council proposal<br />
to impose a 3 per cent local admission<br />
tax in Millersburg and has spearheaded<br />
drives in other towns to defeat similar bills.<br />
Fenkell and Piccadilly<br />
Are Closed in Detroit<br />
DETTROIT—Two longtime north end "opposition"<br />
houses on Fenkell avenue, the Fenkell<br />
and the Piccadilly, have been closed,<br />
with the Fenkell being dismantled and, it is<br />
reported, to be taken over by a labor union<br />
for meeting hall and office use.<br />
The two theatres, two blocks apart, made<br />
up an almost unique competitive situation<br />
for this area, and both were operated for<br />
almost a quarter century by the Wi.sper &<br />
Wetsman circuit, although for the past 15<br />
years they were smaller houses than characteristic<br />
of this big circuit's general operation.<br />
W&W released the Piccadilly after experimenting<br />
with an art film policy, and the<br />
house has been operated somewhat intermittently<br />
since, with Noel W. Sanders as the<br />
lessee. It could not be learned whether the<br />
present closing is temporary or permanent.<br />
The Fenkell was operated by W&W until<br />
last Sunday (30). This marks the third closing<br />
in the neighborhood in the pa.st month,<br />
led off by the Palmer Park.<br />
CINCINNATI<br />
The Lyric Theatre, 48-year-old showplace.<br />
closed here with the last performance of<br />
"The Iron Mistress." The building will be<br />
torn down to make way for a parking lot . . .<br />
Phillip Bock. 87, president of the Royal Theatre<br />
Co.. died Thursday i4). He had been connected<br />
with the Royal Theatre Co. since 1910.<br />

in January as combination bill: "The<br />
Great White Hunter" and "Captain Kidd" . . .<br />
Mary K. Wolf, MGM, was given a one-starpin<br />

was a full and complete discussion of On<br />
theatre tax situation, with the idea of work<br />
ing on ways and means for possible elimina<br />
tion or at least a reduction of the assessmentj<br />

governments.<br />
