Judge Hoy Russell Buys
Daily in Millersburg
MILLERSBURG, OHIO—Judge Hoy L.
Russell, owner of the Russell, and a director
of ITO of Ohio, purchased the daily
HOY L.
RUSSELL
Holmes county Farmer-Hub from Ray and
Cecils White, owners and publishers for the
past 25 years. Associated with Judge Russell
in the enterprise are the members of
his family: Wilbur D. Cox, his son-in-law.
editor; Barbara Russell Cox, news editor, and
his wife, Mrs. Helen Smith Russell, business
manager.
The Holmes County Farmer-Hub was
formed in 1926 with the consolidation of the
Holmes County Farmer, founded in 1828, and
the Holmes County Hub, founded in 1836.
In assuming the post of editor and publisher
of the newspaper, Judge Russell announced
that he will continue the policy as
an independent Democratic newspaper with
no affiliation with any faction, group or
organization.
Judge Russell defeated a city council proposal
to impose a 3 per cent local admission
tax in Millersburg and has spearheaded
drives in other towns to defeat similar bills.
Fenkell and Piccadilly
Are Closed in Detroit
DETTROIT—Two longtime north end "opposition"
houses on Fenkell avenue, the Fenkell
and the Piccadilly, have been closed,
with the Fenkell being dismantled and, it is
reported, to be taken over by a labor union
for meeting hall and office use.
The two theatres, two blocks apart, made
up an almost unique competitive situation
for this area, and both were operated for
almost a quarter century by the Wi.sper &
Wetsman circuit, although for the past 15
years they were smaller houses than characteristic
of this big circuit's general operation.
W&W released the Piccadilly after experimenting
with an art film policy, and the
house has been operated somewhat intermittently
since, with Noel W. Sanders as the
lessee. It could not be learned whether the
present closing is temporary or permanent.
The Fenkell was operated by W&W until
last Sunday (30). This marks the third closing
in the neighborhood in the pa.st month,
led off by the Palmer Park.
