The Park's Mrs. Tliompson was born Anne
Held in Winnipeg In 1912. Her father, a
grocer, died when she wa.s only four. Three
years later her mother, the late Mr.-. Mary
Held, went to work a-s cashier In Winnipeg's
Arlington Theotre.
"She had baby-sitting problems at that
time," Anne recalls, "so she u.scd to take me
with her to the theatre. I wa.s suppo.scd to
sit quietly in a wooden box In the cash
office, but unofficially I spent a lot of time
watching the pictures— and boy. how I loved
those old silent movies! Pearl White. Doug
Fairbanks. William 8. Hart—I adored 'em all.
But I don't think I'm letting my fond memories
of these old days blind me to the
greatness of the best movies being produced
today. Olivier's "Hamlet." for Instance, had
a long and successful run In our theatre:
and it did my heart good to see the people of
all ages come trooping In night after night
to see that wonderful production."
Before joining the film industry. Anne sold
lingerie and handkerchiefs in two Winnipeg
department stores. She liked this all right,
but It was "Just a job." and she kept hankering
for a tle-ln with the movies. Finally she
moved to Vancouver and entered the employ
of Odeon Theatres of Canada as cashier at
the Dunbar 10 years ago.
There are four men and eight women on
her staff at the Park: Two male projectionists,
two doormen, one cashier, one candy
girl, four usherettes, and two cleaning women.
"I try to train my girls Into the habit of
greeting the customers like a hostess and
making them feel at home, especially if they
are regular customers." says Mrs. T. "We
also do our best to handle unusual situations.
One night a man phoned up In despair and
begged us to page his wife .so she could tell
him where to find the baby's diapers. She
was back watching the movie in two minutes."
