The farmers in the area regard this vegetation as most valuable grazing for their cattle. 2 Bushmanland Arid Grassland This vegetation type has a wide distribution, from Namaqualand in the west to Prieska in the east. In the vicinity of Aggeneys the Bushmanland Arid Grassland is interrupted by Bushmanland Sandy Grassland, especially in the Koa River valley, and also by the Bushmanland Inselberg Shrubland that occurs on the scattered mountains and hills in the Aggeneys area and the Aggeneys Gravel Vygieveld, which is considered to be a rare ecosystem, restricted to gravel patches. A large area is covered by quaternary alluvium and sand, though Palaeozoic diamictites of the Dwyka Group and meta-sediments of Mokolian age outcrop in the area, forming the mountains and hills. The soil is red-yellow, apedal freely drained but shallow, typically representing the Ag and Ae land types. Rainfall SATO Aggeneys July 2011 48
is low, 70-110 mm per annum, mostly falling in late summer to autumn (Mucina & Rutherford 2006). The extensive plains are sparsely vegetated by grassland with Stipagrostis species giving the appearance of a semi-desert steppe. Drought resistant dwarf shrubs are often present (Figure 13), while annual forbs flower abundantly in years with good rainfall. Figure 12: Figure 13. Typical Bushmanland Arid Grassland.
