• Red sand plains and dune fields. The open plains grade into the red sand and
dune fields, but most noticeable is that the various gravels are no longer on the
surface, the grass clumps are larger but more widely spaced, and some trees as
well as shrubs grow in these deeper soils. Various Stipagrostis grasses are still
present in the flatter areas, especially the large-seeded St. ciliata and some
Brachiaria glomerulata, with the tall coarse St. amabilis more common on the
dune crests and Centropodia glauca on the deeper rolling sands. Small
Parkinsonia trees, and the similar Prosopis alien together with a few Acacia
species, are scattered in the dunes, while Rhigozum bushes are also
widespread.
