Professor John Niland AC<br />
Chairman and Independent Director of CLFM<br />
Aged 69<br />
Appointed 11 October 2006<br />
Experience and expertise<br />
Professor Niland was appointed an Independent Director and<br />
Chairman of CLFM in October 2006.<br />
John has extensive commercial and leadership experience<br />
in the university sector, both in Australia and internationally.<br />
He is Professor Emeritus of UNSW, and a former Vice-<br />
Chancellor and President of UNSW (1992-2002). Professor<br />
Niland was formerly President of the Australian Vice-<br />
Chancellors Committee; founding Director of the Group of<br />
Eight Universities and Universitas 21; former Chairman of the<br />
Environment Protection Authority (NSW), Unisearch Limited<br />
and realestate.com.au; and former Board member of the<br />
Sydney Olympics Building Commission, St Vincent’s Hospital<br />
and Sydney Symphony Orchestra Foundation.<br />

BCom, MCom Hon PhD (UNSW), PhD (Illinois), DUniv (SCU);<br />
Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA),<br />

Experience and expertise<br />
Professor Burdon was originally appointed as an Independent<br />
Director in October 2006 and appointed as a Transfield<br />
nominated Director in February 2008.<br />
Steve has extensive management experience. He previously<br />
held the position of Managing Director of OTC, Group<br />
Managing Director of Telstra, and Managing Director of<br />
British Telecom Asia Pacific. In addition, Steve has experience<br />
as a non-executive director on over a dozen private and<br />
public company boards in Australia, NZ, India and Japan.<br />
He is currently a Visiting Professor of Management at the<br />
University of Technology Sydney and CASS Business School<br />
London.<br />
