Select<strong>in</strong>g partners and form<strong>in</strong>g a benchmark<strong>in</strong>g group<br />

Guidel<strong>in</strong>es - <strong>Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g</strong> partners should:<br />

• Be selected based on a shared understand<strong>in</strong>g of the benchmark<strong>in</strong>g<br />

goals, fields and comparisons, which may or may not rely on exist<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>ter-<strong>in</strong>stitutional contacts<br />

• Have a clear and communicated understand<strong>in</strong>g of the expected<br />

degree of <strong>in</strong>volvement (time, human and f<strong>in</strong>ancial resources) from the<br />

start<br />

• Ensure a high level of trust with<strong>in</strong> benchmark<strong>in</strong>g networks, as sensitive<br />

data will be exchanged<br />

• Obta<strong>in</strong> commitment from senior management of all partner higher<br />

<strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

Once the focus of the benchmark<strong>in</strong>g exercise has been decided, the next<br />

stage is the identification of potential partners, Given the project’s approach,<br />

this section takes the po<strong>in</strong>t of view of <strong>in</strong>dividual higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

search<strong>in</strong>g for several partners. But although it does not look explicitly at<br />

one-to-one benchmark<strong>in</strong>g approaches, the same pr<strong>in</strong>ciples apply.<br />

Compar<strong>in</strong>g between higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions with similar characteristics<br />

<strong>in</strong> terms of profile, size and type of activities as a rule will be more profitable<br />

than compar<strong>in</strong>g with totally different higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions. To<br />

identify higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions with similar profiles to one’s own or a<br />

highly perform<strong>in</strong>g higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitution <strong>in</strong> a particular area, <strong>in</strong>stitutions<br />

will need to use desk research, personal contacts (for example ga<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

through jo<strong>in</strong>t projects or long-stand<strong>in</strong>g relations with other <strong>in</strong>stitutions) and<br />

memberships <strong>in</strong> European networks.<br />
