A STEP BY STEP APPROACH<br />

The APQC <strong>Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Code of Conduct<br />

The APQC International <strong>Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Clear<strong>in</strong>ghouse service has<br />

adopted a <strong>Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g</strong> Code of Conduct for efficient and ethical benchmark<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

The Code of Conduct can be found on the website www.apqc.org.<br />

The code is constructed around eight pr<strong>in</strong>ciples, i.e.<br />

1. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Legality of the benchmark<strong>in</strong>g exercise and data collection<br />

2. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Exchange<br />

• Be will<strong>in</strong>g to provide the same type and level of <strong>in</strong>formation that is<br />

requested from the benchmark<strong>in</strong>g partner<br />

• Be honest and complete<br />

3. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Confidentiality<br />

4. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Use<br />

• Use <strong>in</strong>formation obta<strong>in</strong>ed through benchmark<strong>in</strong>g only for purposes<br />

stated to the benchmark<strong>in</strong>g partner<br />

5. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Contact<br />

• Respect the corporate culture of partner organisations and work<br />

with<strong>in</strong> mutually agreed procedures<br />

• Obta<strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual’s permission before provid<strong>in</strong>g his or her name <strong>in</strong><br />

response to a contact request<br />

6. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Preparation<br />

• Be prepared prior to mak<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>itial benchmark<strong>in</strong>g contact<br />

• Provide a questionnaire prior to benchmark<strong>in</strong>g visits<br />

7. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Completion<br />

• Complete each benchmark<strong>in</strong>g study to the satisfaction of all<br />

benchmark<strong>in</strong>g partners as mutually agreed<br />

8. Pr<strong>in</strong>ciple of Understand<strong>in</strong>g and Action<br />

• Understand how the benchmark<strong>in</strong>g partner would like to be treated<br />
