Once the data have been collected and compiled <strong>in</strong>to comparative reports,<br />

the analysis of gaps <strong>in</strong> performance and differences between <strong>in</strong>stitutions will<br />

serve as an objective basis on which to improve processes, either at the level<br />

of <strong>in</strong>dividual higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions or as a collective exercise with<strong>in</strong><br />

the partnership. Depend<strong>in</strong>g on the level and focus of the exercise, there will<br />

be different implications for strategic goal sett<strong>in</strong>g and actions plans to<br />

achieve superior performance with<strong>in</strong> higher <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong>stitutions. It is<br />

important to bear <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d the different national and cultural contexts which<br />

will affect results.<br />

In the context of quality assurance <strong>in</strong> Australia, <strong>Benchmark<strong>in</strong>g</strong>: A manual<br />

for Australian universities, McK<strong>in</strong>non (1999) identified important aspects<br />

for university life and ways to benchmark them, provid<strong>in</strong>g 67 benchmarks<br />

<strong>in</strong> 9 areas of university activity, i.e. governance, plann<strong>in</strong>g and management,<br />

external relationships, f<strong>in</strong>ancial and physical <strong>in</strong>frastructure,<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g and teach<strong>in</strong>g, student support, research, library and <strong>in</strong>formation<br />

services, <strong>in</strong>ternationalisation and staff<strong>in</strong>g. The manual identified good<br />

practices and how to assess achievements <strong>in</strong> terms of outcome, i.e.<br />

lagg<strong>in</strong>g, drivers and learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

In 2006, the DentEd IIII EU-funded thematic network under the auspices<br />

of the Association for dental Education <strong>in</strong> Europe produced a report and<br />

series of toolkits to assist dental schools <strong>in</strong> develop<strong>in</strong>g appropriate<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternal quality assurance systems <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with exist<strong>in</strong>g faculty/university<br />

QA systems, as a way to respond to the Bologna Process and the harmonisation<br />

of dental <strong>education</strong> <strong>in</strong> Europe.<br />

The toolkit provided <strong>guide</strong>l<strong>in</strong>es to work with programme auditors, selfassessment<br />

templates (curriculum, faculty staff, students, facilities and<br />

l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g to professional associations) and examples of good practices for<br />
