IDIS 222 – Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Portfolio (E)<br />

The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course is to develop a pr<strong>of</strong>ession portfolio that is a type <strong>of</strong><br />

performance assessment containing a defined set <strong>of</strong> materials documenting prescribed<br />

student-learning outcomes. The documentation provides a qualitative look at indirect<br />

and direct evidence <strong>of</strong> student knowledge, skills and attitudes required by the curricula.<br />

IDIS 223 – Cultural Competence (E)<br />

This course examines our own culture – the Iatroculture – and preconceived notions<br />

about cultures, races and other groups. The content will identify features that make<br />

cultures unique while exploring the commonalities among cultures. The course will<br />

teach students new skills to appreciate all cultures. Graded S/U.<br />

IDIS 224 – American Sign Language for Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals (E)<br />

This is an introductory course to familiarize the medical student with a foundational<br />

working knowledge <strong>of</strong> American Sign Language with a strong emphasis on the medical<br />

sign language skill acquisition. Students will learn and use the manual alphabet and<br />

basic sign language to communicate with other students in lecture and interactive small<br />

group settings. Graded S/U.<br />

IDIS 226 – Medical Humanities – Body Images in Medicine and the Arts (E)<br />

This course focuses on the human body. Photography, art, literature, anthropology,<br />

art history, cultural studies, modernism, commercialism, feminism and medicine are all<br />

explored as ways to encourage students to consider broader cultural interpretations <strong>of</strong><br />

the human body. Graded S/U. (Formerly IDIS 208)<br />

IDIS 228 – Foundation <strong>of</strong> Physical Activity Behavior (E)<br />

This course utilizes study designs, risk calculation, measures <strong>of</strong> association and<br />

subject selection to study physical activity behavior. This foundation <strong>of</strong> physical activity<br />

research methodology will be used to examine relevant scientific information concerning<br />

the association between physical activity and chronic diseases. Graded S/U.<br />

IDIS 229 – Human Patient Simulator Concepts (E)<br />

This course is designed to enhance student patient interview and physical<br />

examination skills through the use <strong>of</strong> human patient simulators and the application <strong>of</strong><br />

didactic material in the creation <strong>of</strong> a case scenario. Graded S/U.<br />
