<strong>KCUMB</strong> policy presents the academic standards that apply to all students receiving<br />

financial aid.<br />

The academic progress <strong>of</strong> each student is monitored and evaluated at the end <strong>of</strong> each<br />

academic year by the Promotion and Graduation Committee. The Promotion and<br />

Graduation Committee reviews records to see if the student has fulfilled all academic<br />

requirements and has maintained the standards <strong>of</strong> ethical, moral, personal and<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional conduct required for continued study <strong>of</strong> osteopathic medicine.<br />

A student whose cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0 at the end <strong>of</strong> the<br />

academic year is deemed Not In Good Standing. A student failing to meet one or more <strong>of</strong><br />

the standards <strong>of</strong> progress will be considered as Not In Good Standing and placed on<br />

financial aid probation. A student may be allowed one enrollment period to regain a 2.0<br />

G.P.A. Financial Aid personnel will notify and explain the loss <strong>of</strong> eligibility to the<br />

student. A student placed on Conditional Status will be on Financial Aid probation.<br />

Financial aid eligibility will be monitored with each disbursement and subsequent<br />

requests for financial aid. First- and second-year students with two section failures will<br />

have financial aid suspended until the result <strong>of</strong> the next exam is known. Third- and<br />

fourth-year students with two COMLEX failures will have financial aid suspended until<br />

the passage <strong>of</strong> their third attempt.<br />

To be eligible for financial aid, a student must:<br />

• Not be auditing courses<br />

• Not be on suspension from academic participation or on leave <strong>of</strong> absence<br />

• Have a minimum 2.0 grade point average at the end <strong>of</strong> the second year in order<br />

to remain eligible for further financial aid while on clinical clerkships<br />

• Not be placed in any status by administrative directive that stipulates the student<br />

is considered “Not In Good Standing” or “Not Meeting Satisfactory Progress”<br />

Loan Programs and Sources<br />

Primary Care Loan (PCL)<br />

As <strong>of</strong> July 1, 1993, PCL replaced HPSL for new borrowers. A student must commit to<br />

primary care including the internship, residency and practice. The interest rate is 5<br />

percent. Loan amount is contingent upon the availability <strong>of</strong> funds. Available to third- and<br />

fourth-year students only.<br />

Federal Stafford Loans<br />

The Stafford interest rate is fixed at 6.8 percent. An origination fee <strong>of</strong> .5 percent plus<br />

a default fee <strong>of</strong> 1 percent are charged and deducted from the loan proceeds. Fees/interest<br />

applies to both Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford loans. The cumulative maximum<br />

Stafford limit for medical students is $224,000, <strong>of</strong> which only $65,500 can be Subsidized<br />

Stafford.<br />
