General Introduction<br />

The Admissions Office prides itself in delivering pr<strong>of</strong>essional service to all<br />

applicants. The <strong>of</strong>fice is mindful that for applicants, the lack <strong>of</strong> knowledge about the way<br />

the application process works can be stressful. Consequently, applicants are encouraged<br />

to visit the <strong>KCUMB</strong> Web site (www.kcumb.edu) to review the application process and<br />

most frequently asked questions for clarification. Applicants are also welcome to contact<br />

the Admissions Office directly. Patrons, whether they are inquirers, applicants or<br />

students, will find the Admissions Office to be pr<strong>of</strong>essional, knowledgeable and very<br />

approachable.<br />

<strong>KCUMB</strong> is a private institution and encourages applications from qualified students<br />

who are interested in pursuing a career in osteopathic medicine, regardless <strong>of</strong> their state<br />

<strong>of</strong> permanent residence.<br />

Minimum Technical Standards for Admission and Matriculation<br />

<strong>KCUMB</strong> is committed to the admission and matriculation <strong>of</strong> qualified applicants and<br />

acknowledges awareness <strong>of</strong> laws that prohibit discrimination against anyone on the basis<br />

<strong>of</strong> race, color, national origin, age, religion, sex or disability.<br />

The <strong>University</strong> will not discriminate against disabled (or handicapped) individuals<br />

who are otherwise qualified, while expecting applicants and students to meet certain<br />

minimal technical standards as set forth herein. In adopting these standards, the<br />

<strong>University</strong> believes it must keep in mind the ultimate safety <strong>of</strong> the patients for whom its<br />

graduates will eventually care. The standards reflect what the <strong>University</strong> believes, in its<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional, academic judgment, are the minimum expectations <strong>of</strong> osteopathic medical<br />

students (and physicians) necessary for the safe, efficient and effective delivery <strong>of</strong> medical<br />

care.<br />

The holder <strong>of</strong> a doctor <strong>of</strong> osteopathic medicine degree must have the knowledge and<br />

skills to function in a broad variety <strong>of</strong> clinical situations and to render a wide spectrum <strong>of</strong><br />

patient care. In order to carry out the activities described below, candidates for the D.O.<br />

degree must be able to consistently, quickly, and accurately integrate all information<br />

received and have the ability to learn, integrate, analyze and synthesize data.<br />

A candidate for the D.O. degree must have multiple abilities and skills, including<br />

observation, communication, motor, conceptual, integrative and quantitative, and<br />

behavioral and social. Technological compensation can be made for handicaps in some<br />

<strong>of</strong> these areas, but a candidate must be able to perform in a reasonably independent<br />

manner.<br />
