Van Riper grew up on his (~Hher's farm in Montville,<br />
New jersey. As soon as he was old enough to assume any<br />
real responsibilities, he labored on the f~lmily r:trIn during<br />
the summer months, when he was on vacation ('rom the<br />
public schools of Boonton, New Jersey. It was while attending<br />
high school that Van Riper decided definitely to<br />
enter the Business Administration field. Lacking experience,<br />
other than hard farm work, he decided to atLenci<br />
<strong>Babson</strong> Institute to acquire those fundamentals necessary<br />
to a young man in .modern business.<br />
PRACTICAL TRAINING<br />
During the summer of '940, Van Riper worked in the<br />
Manager's office. of the Newark Farmers' Markel, Inc.,<br />
tabulating figures.<br />
At <strong>Babson</strong> Institute, Van Riper was well trained in tlI('<br />
fundamen tals of the three main fields of a business en tnprise-<br />
Finance, Distribution, and Production . .<br />
In the two-year course, he studied such sLlI~jecls as<br />
Accounting, Federal Taxation, Typf'writing, Business<br />
English, Finance, Salesmanship, Production Management,<br />
History of Businf'ss, Statistics, and Business Planning.<br />
He preferred those ('oursf'S dealing with Finance,<br />
Statistics, Business Law, and Economics.<br />
THE BUSINESS MAN<br />
Van Riper found it easy to make r'riends at BabsO'n<br />
Institute. He got along well with the faculty because he<br />
could take orders and eXf'cute them, applying good<br />
common sense and hours of hard work. Because of his<br />
bucolic background and because he has always earned<br />
his own money, Van Riper is a vf'ry self-reliant individual.<br />
Van Riper is determined, loyal, and persistent in all<br />
business transactions.
