Chapter 5: OPTIONS AND PREFERRED<br />
SYSTEM FOR <strong>WMATA</strong><br />
Figure 4-3, depicts a server residing within close physical proximity to other <strong>WMATA</strong><br />
servers. It is assumed th<strong>at</strong> the vendor will supply and configure this system to<br />
<strong>com</strong>munic<strong>at</strong>e with other <strong>WMATA</strong> systems such as the <strong>WMATA</strong> web servers. The<br />
<strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> from the pilot site will be made available <strong>at</strong> the <strong>WMATA</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ions center in<br />
<strong>real</strong> or near <strong>real</strong> <strong>time</strong>.<br />
Comp<strong>at</strong>ibility with Other Systems<br />
The <strong>parking</strong> <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> system will incorpor<strong>at</strong>e and <strong>com</strong>ply with all applicable ITS<br />
standards. The system will be <strong>com</strong>p<strong>at</strong>ible and integr<strong>at</strong>ed with VDOT, the Regional<br />
Integr<strong>at</strong>ed Transport<strong>at</strong>ion Inform<strong>at</strong>ion System (RITIS), and the Virginia 511 system.<br />
Inform<strong>at</strong>ion Transmission Requirements<br />
These applic<strong>at</strong>ions will require <strong>at</strong> a minimum the following <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> fields to be<br />
transmitted from each facility:<br />
• Facility identifier<br />
• Spaces available or occupied (by type <strong>of</strong> space)<br />
• D<strong>at</strong>e/<strong>time</strong> stamp<br />
Two types <strong>of</strong> additional <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> will also be needed. The first are standards rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
overhead. These are other pieces <strong>of</strong> <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> th<strong>at</strong> may be required from one or more<br />
ITS standards. The second is additional calcul<strong>at</strong>ed <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> th<strong>at</strong> can be calcul<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
either on-site by the facility, or by the same <strong>com</strong>puter th<strong>at</strong> prepares the text feed for the<br />
<strong>WMATA</strong> web site. The calcul<strong>at</strong>ed fields will include:<br />
• Current st<strong>at</strong>us (open, near full, full, closed)<br />
• Nearest altern<strong>at</strong>ive with available <strong>parking</strong><br />
Once the <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> is received and additional fields are calcul<strong>at</strong>ed, the <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong><br />
received from each garage can be placed into one <strong>of</strong> the following form<strong>at</strong>s, as shown in<br />
Figure 5-1, depending on the st<strong>at</strong>us <strong>of</strong> the facility. This form<strong>at</strong> would reside <strong>at</strong> the<br />
central smart <strong>parking</strong> server.<br />
