<strong>WMATA</strong> Real-Time Parking<br />

Inform<strong>at</strong>ion Feasibility Study<br />

Currently Existing Applic<strong>at</strong>ions<br />

Chapter 5: OPTIONS AND PREFERRED<br />

SYSTEM FOR <strong>WMATA</strong><br />

Northern Virginia currently has a number <strong>of</strong> existing applic<strong>at</strong>ions th<strong>at</strong> could potentially<br />

include or incorpor<strong>at</strong>e <strong>real</strong>-<strong>time</strong> <strong>parking</strong> <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong>. These are described below. The<br />

<strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> from the smart <strong>parking</strong> system is discussed rel<strong>at</strong>ive to each applic<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

<strong>WMATA</strong> Web and Mobile Device Interfaces<br />

<strong>WMATA</strong> provides an extensive web site (http://wm<strong>at</strong>a.<strong>com</strong>). The site currently <strong>of</strong>fers a<br />

variety <strong>of</strong> <strong>real</strong>-<strong>time</strong> <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong>, including alerts for service changes and interruptions<br />

and the st<strong>at</strong>us <strong>of</strong> accessible elev<strong>at</strong>ors. Arrival<br />

<strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> for the next trains <strong>at</strong> each st<strong>at</strong>ion is Figure 5-2 <strong>WMATA</strong> Next<br />

available. Bus arrival <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> had previously Train Inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

been provided by NextBus; however, th<strong>at</strong> service is<br />

not currently available on the <strong>WMATA</strong> site.<br />

<strong>WMATA</strong> also currently provides a version <strong>of</strong> their web<br />

page enhanced for portable devices<br />

(http://wm<strong>at</strong>a.<strong>com</strong>/mobile). The agency also makes<br />

service alerts and other <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> available via<br />

RSS/XML feeds, including train arrival <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong>, as<br />

shown in Figure 5-2.<br />

Because <strong>WMATA</strong> is already delivering <strong>real</strong>-<strong>time</strong><br />

<strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> to its customers, the addition <strong>of</strong> <strong>parking</strong><br />

<strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> to existing systems can be done with<br />

minimal need for additional resources. The same<br />

basic <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> feed th<strong>at</strong> would be used on the<br />

<strong>WMATA</strong> web site can also be used for many <strong>of</strong> the<br />

other applic<strong>at</strong>ions described herein.<br />

Initial Install<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

The first deployment would be on a test web site, which could be either inside or outside<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>WMATA</strong> domain. Following internal user testing, the links could be made<br />

available for public testing. It is re<strong>com</strong>mended th<strong>at</strong> the test link be emailed to a subset<br />

<strong>of</strong> SmarTrip users who are known to have used the facility in the past thirty days. The<br />

test link can be followed some days l<strong>at</strong>er with a brief web-based customer service<br />

survey th<strong>at</strong> will seek to identify if the <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> is perceived favorably by users, and<br />

whether the use <strong>of</strong> the <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> is causing them to alter their use <strong>of</strong> the facility. It is<br />

possible th<strong>at</strong> improved <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> could result in increased demand for <strong>parking</strong> and<br />

th<strong>at</strong>, as a result, the facilities could fill sooner and need to be closed earlier.<br />

Following s<strong>at</strong>isfactory results <strong>of</strong> the pilot test and incorpor<strong>at</strong>ing user feedback, the<br />

<strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> link can then be included in the following <strong>WMATA</strong> <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> pages (a<br />

graphic represent<strong>at</strong>ion is shown in Figure 5-3):<br />

• St<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> pages for st<strong>at</strong>ions with <strong>real</strong>-<strong>time</strong> <strong>parking</strong> <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong>,<br />

• Parking <strong>inform<strong>at</strong>ion</strong> for those st<strong>at</strong>ions, and<br />

• Online maps with driving directions link for those st<strong>at</strong>ions.<br />
