Theodore Fyten Brewing Co. - #53
St. Paul, MN | www.fytenburgbeer.com
History: The Theodore Fyten Brewing Company was founded in 1999 in St. Paul, MN, by Tod Fyten II. The roots of the
company however, date back to 1869 when Theodore Fyten immigrated from his native Netherlands to the Upper Levee
neighborhood in St. Paul, MN. Having grown up in the Burgundian province of Limburg, which today is divided between
Belgium, Holland and Germany, beer was an important staple of life as it is still to this day. Moving beer from the brewery
to the public was an important task. The importance of a good draft hitch was key to any brewers success, and there
were none finer for a brewer to own then a Belgian hitch. This said, Theodore, upon arriving began working with local
brewers in St. Paul providing harnesses and horses for their breweries. This tradition carried on thru his son John who
was a leather craftsmen and harness maker, and then to his grandson, George Sr., and great-grandson George Jr. both of
whom were teamsters, with George Jr. working for the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company. Carrying on the family tradition
Tod began his career at the age of 10 years old making Burgundy and Riesling wines with his father Richard, then continuing
his career in fermentation in college as a campus rep for the Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company. From there he
would help pioneer the Minnesota craft brewing industry as one of the original brewers at the James Page Brewery and
go on to found one of the nation’s largest consumer beer publications, Midwest, Rocky Mountain and Northwest Beer
Notes. Today the brewery is housed in the horse stables of the Christopher Stahlmann and Jacob Schmidt Brewery, the
same buildings his grandfather George Jr. worked in for Mr. Schmidt many years before.
