The Mercer Environmental Tourism Charter <strong>School</strong> (METCS) provides<br />
students with multiple learning experiences in conservation,<br />
entrepreneurship, and integrating tourism development with<br />
environmentally sound practices. The courses offered build leadership<br />
skills and provide career training experiences in vocational and<br />
professional fields that focus on local employment opportunities.<br />
Students enrolled in METCS work with 21st century technologies,<br />
including computers, ITV distance education technology, online classes<br />
and conferencing, personal and project website creations, simulations,<br />
research, and presentation software to create and communicate<br />
information required for various learning activities. Partnerships with<br />
community businesses and natural resource specialists provides hands-on<br />
experiences for the students. Each student has an individualized plan for<br />
student learning designed by the student and METCS staff. Students<br />
complete a portfolio that highlights projects and work experience<br />
situations.<br />

The Merrill Adult Diploma Academy educates 18-20 year old high<br />
school dropouts, Students may work with a teacher in small groups to<br />
meet common goals, independently online, online with teacher-led peer<br />
groups or in a more traditional manner with textbooks and workbooks. In<br />
addition to academic work in the core areas of English, mathematics,<br />
science and the social studies, students will receive small group<br />
instruction in various life skill areas including work readiness,<br />
technology, and AODA issues. A lead teacher/coordinator works with<br />
each student on an individual basis to develop an Individual Learning<br />
Plan that outlines the course of study needed to graduate. In addition to<br />
academic studies, students will also complete a work based component to<br />
help establish strong work skills and will be involved in a volunteer<br />
community service project.<br />
