430 YEARS OF THE LIPIZZANER
Prelepi beli konj lipicanec, ki izvira s slovenskega Krasa, v
konjeniškem svetu predstavlja simbol gracioznosti, dostojanstva
in elegance. Prvi začetki organizirane reje lipicancev segajo
natanko 430 let v preteklost, ko je nadvojvoda Karel II., brat
cesarja habsburške monarhije, pod katero so tedaj spadale tudi
spomenike Slovenije in predstavlja center vzreje ter selekcije
čistokrvnih konj lipicanske pasme.
Svetovna populacija lipicanskih konj danes šteje približno 6000
konj. V Sloveniji jih je približno 1000, od teh pa jih je približno
600 v zasebni reji Združenja rejcev lipicancev Slovenije.
19. maj si je Združenje rejcev lipicanca izbralo za praznik,
posvečen lipicancu. Vsako leto v drugem slovenskem kraju, prvo
soboto po 19. maju, organizirajo dan lipicanca. Na prireditvi z
zanimivim konjeniškim in zabavnim programom skušajo približati
bele lepotce kar največ obiskovalcem.
Vsako leto v soboto pred praznikom lipicanci obiščejo tudi
Ljubljano. Na sobotni dopoldan ljubljanski park Tivoli popestrijo
lipiške kočije in kočije Združenja rejcev lipicanca Slovenije, ki
mimoidoče brezplačno vozijo po parku.
In the equestrian world the magnificent white Lipizzaner horse, which
originates from the Slovenian Kras, has long been synonymous with grace,
dignity and elegance. Organised breeding of the Lipizzaners started
exactly 430 years ago. On 19 May 1580 the Trieste bishop Coret sold
to the Austrian Archduke Karl II, brother of the emperor of the Hapsburg
monarchy, which at the time also included Slovenian lands, the Lipica
estate along with a farm of Karst stallions, where the Archduke proposed to
breed horses for the imperial court in Vienna.
Nowadays the Lipica stud farm is regarded as a major Slovenian culturalhistorical
monument and continues to operate as a centre for the rearing
and selection of purebred Lipizzaner horses.
At present, the Lipizzaner world population is estimated at approximately
6,000 horses. Roughly 600 of Slovenia’s 1,000 Lipizzaners are owned by
private breeders – members of the Slovenian Lipizzaner society, Združenje
rejcev lipicanca Slovenije.
Združenje rejcev lipicanca designated 19 May as the Lipizzaner holiday.
The annual Lipizzaner festival Dan Lipicanca is held in a different place
in Slovenia every year on the first Saturday following 19 May. The event,
which features a spectacular equestrian show and a thrilling entertainment
programme, is a wonderful opportunity for the public at large to see and
admire these splendid white beauties in action.
On the Saturday before the big day Lipizzaners pay a visit to the country
capital, Ljubljana. In the morning, pulling the carriages of the Lipica stallion
farm and the Slovenian Lipizzaner society, they delight people with free
rides in the Ljubljana park Tivoli.
On 23 April 2010, World Book and Copyright
Day, Ljubljana will become the World Book
Capital for a year. For the past ten years,
UNESCO has bestowed this title on an annual
basis to a different city as part of its mission to
raise the general awareness across the globe
of the fundamental importance of books and
reading, especially in our day and age where
the time devoted to reading books is becoming
increasingly limited. Ljubljana will take over as
a city where books are regarded as vital to overall
quality of life by a vast majority of its population.
The “Book Year” will kick off with the opening gala on 23
April at the Ljubljana Križanke directed by distinguished theatre
director Matjaž Berger.
The entire month of May will be dominated by the international literary
festival World Literature: Fable 2010. Featuring writers from all
continents, the festival is designed to promote both different world
literatures as well as intercultural dialogue.
At the close of the Year in April 2011, Ljubljana will host a world
congress with the central theme “The Book as a Vehicle of Human
Evolution”. The congress will provide a terrific meeting venue for experts
on cultural policy, copyright, publishing or literary reviews.
Discussions will also include topics as e-books, digitalisation,
the importance of translation…
A rich programme of events scheduled to unfold in the course of the year
has been designed by those whose mission and work involves books
– from authors, societies, libraries, museums, galleries, theatres to
publishers. City parks and squares will abound with market stalls and
there will be no shortage of events… Books will be made available at
very affordable prices, and new book lending services will open. Ljubljana
will also get a new institution, Trubar’s House of Literature at Ribji trg
close to the Three Bridges, which is set to open its doors in April 2010.
O lepoti belih konj priča tudi fotomonografija Lipicanci,
mojstra fotografije Joca Žnidaršiča. Knjiga je nastala kot
rezultat avtorjevih dolgoletnih obiskov kobilarne, kot poklon
veličastnim konjem, ki predstavljajo enega pomembnejših
simbolov Slovenije. Zato je monografijo v dar prejel tudi
že marsikateri pomembni državnik sveta. Na voljo je v
slovenskem, angleškem in nemškem jeziku.
The beauty of these white horses has also been captured
in the photo monograph Lipicanci, “Lipizzaners”, by master
photographer Joco Žnidaršič. The book, which has come
into being as a result of the artist’s numerous visits of the
Lipica stallion farm over the years, is a tribute to these
exquisite creatures which have become one of Slovenia’s
major icons. For that reason many a statesman has been
presented with the gift of this acclaimed monograph.
The book is available in Slovenian, English and German.
