again in reference to his fa<strong>the</strong>r, as well as <strong>the</strong> “grave [man].” Both<br />
poems make a plea to Thomas’s fa<strong>the</strong>r to “rage” against “that<br />
darkest day.” Unfortunately in <strong>the</strong> “Elegy,” Thomas’s fa<strong>the</strong>r does<br />
just <strong>the</strong> opposite; “He dreaded that he died…what he was was<br />
plain.” Thomas’s fa<strong>the</strong>r had done in <strong>the</strong> “Elegy” what <strong>the</strong> wise<br />
men and good men had done, which was end <strong>the</strong>ir lives without<br />
any larger meaning, importance, or great accomplishment.<br />
Thomas yearned to see his fa<strong>the</strong>r leave <strong>the</strong> world proudly,<br />
arrogantly, battling <strong>the</strong> “dying of <strong>the</strong> night,” but, instead, he left<br />
“without a breath” (Westphal 114).<br />
