A Call for<br />

Universal Health<br />

Care<br />

GOVT 2302:American Government II. Amy Schilling<br />

writes a political speech inspired by <strong>the</strong> film, Sicko,<br />

Michael Moore’s satirical indictment of <strong>the</strong> American<br />

healthcare system. In her speech she adopts <strong>the</strong><br />

voice of a liberal Democrat from Massachusetts who<br />

calls for universal health care. Then she reflects on a<br />

personal experience that transcends <strong>the</strong> underlying<br />

<strong>the</strong>me of Sicko and shows why national healthcare<br />

has become a salient political issue today. If anything,<br />

Ms. Schilling’s paper is a convincing call to arms and<br />

demonstrates why students should become more<br />

politically active.<br />

on national health care<br />

“he perception of arrogance may be that of an affliction, an<br />

encumbrance that would o<strong>the</strong>rwise allow for objective insight. It<br />

may also be viewed as an asset when applied to <strong>the</strong> appropriate<br />

situation. Our nation is many things; it encompasses wealth<br />

and power that has been derived from strength and innovation.<br />

Perhaps it is an arrogant statement to make, but I believe that a<br />

country of such greatness should be capable of taking care of its<br />

citizens. It is <strong>the</strong> character of such citizens that has persevered<br />

throughout our short history to allow us to overcome obstacles<br />

and acquire <strong>the</strong> status we have today. Yet I feel that we have<br />

faltered, because a nation that has so much is capable of having<br />

so little when charged with looking after <strong>the</strong> health and wellbeing<br />

of its population. This is <strong>the</strong> fault of every individual, as<br />

well as that of <strong>the</strong> lawmakers that we have put in place to make<br />

those vital decisions.<br />

The private health care industry–<strong>the</strong> health insurance<br />

companies and pharmaceutical firms–have betrayed <strong>the</strong><br />

American people. The film by Michael Moore, Sicko, shines a<br />

spotlight on <strong>the</strong>se betrayals. Many people with health insurance<br />

are routinely denied coverage when <strong>the</strong>y become ill. Apparently,<br />

<strong>the</strong> insurance companies only want to provide coverage to<br />

healthy people in order to maximize <strong>the</strong>ir profits. When those<br />

healthy people get sick and need extensive medical care,<br />

many are denied <strong>the</strong> financial support <strong>the</strong>y expected to receive<br />
