company provides its services to smaller customers. Each year we
carry approximately 7 million tons of this commodity.
Typical goods of this commodity are: black coal, coal cake, ovoid
and other similar solid propellants made of black coal, brown coal,
agglomerated coal, coke and coalite made of black coal, brown coal
or turf, fast extrusion coal.
As with commodity metals, we mentioned that ZSSK CARGO is a part
of competitive environment, then the double is valid in relation to
this commodity. Our competition includes private rail carriers, since
it concerns transportations by block trains, with slight seasonal
variations, non-demanding for operation organization.

Commodity No. 8 – Iron Ore
In commodity “iron ore”, ZSSK CARGO carries agglomerated and nonagglomerated
iron ore as well as semi-finished goods on iron ore basis.
A significant part is made up of services provided to metallurgical
enterprises. A great share of iron ore transportations belongs to
transportations on the broad-gauge track for company U.S. Steel
Košice. The company participates in providing the metallurgical plants
in Ostrava with sufficient volume of iron ore. The first certified logistic
train, which transports the Ukrainian pellets from Čierna nad Tisou to
Austria daily, for company Voest Alpine, was implemented already in
2001 in cooperation with Austrian railways.
Iron ore is transported mainly by the following wagon series:
Es, Eas, Eaos, Eanos,
Faccs.

easy at first sight
We introduce: product manager for metals and coal
Product managers – market analysts monitor development of
transportation within assigned commodities, they also monitor market
development and in cooperation with marketing section in particular,
they propose measures for provision of marketing plan fulfilment.
Within their powers, they determine price conditions for business
managers, or prepare basic documents for their determination.
Transportations of commodities coal and metals in ZSSK CARGO are a
part of daily workload of product manager Ing. Ľubomír Krotký. He has
good professional qualification for this job. Before he started working
as a product manager, he was in managerial position in a demanding
environment of rail transhipment yard in Čierna nad Tisou as well as in
other positions in operation.
After graduating from VŠDS in Žilina (University of Žilina, Faculty of
Transport and Communications), he started working for railways
in 1988 as a train dispatcher in several stations. In the following
years, he was promoted and in Čierna nad Tisou, he worked as a
station dispatcher, deputy of head of broad-gauge track, transport
and carriage deputy and reached a position of the director of Rail
Transhipment Yard Čierna nad Tisou in 1996. Meanwhile, he also
worked in commercial and business positions in Veľká Ida and in
Košice. After transformation, from January 1, 1997, he became a
manager of Administration of Transport Control in Čierna nad Tisou.
From 1997 to 1998, he worked as a transport deputy of the railway
station master in Košice. The following two years, he practised as a
regulation officer in Freight Transport Division, from 2001 to 2003 as
a head of realization department of GVD (timetable of train traffic).
He has been working in his current position of commodity/product
manager since December 2003.
As stated briefly by Ing. Ľubomír Krotký, in his job, it is important to
know: where from, where to, what, who and who to. However, it is not
that easy.
– The key responsibilities include monitoring of transportations,
preparation of statistical documents, reviews, comparisons. Product
managers also monitor competing carriers; from this viewpoint, the
position of ZSSK CARGO, as a former monopoly carrier, is rather
difficult. Railway transportation market is closed; individual players
are only sharing stable volumes. Coal, for example, is an ideal
commodity for third-party carriers, since it is transported in block
trains by one type of wagons, - explains some of the issues of working
as a product manager Ing. Ľ. Krotký.
From the viewpoint of road transport competition, the trade division
is concerned about closures in the main rail route between Bratislava
and Žilina. During closures, ZSSK CARGO has to cancel some
transportations and after these closures are over, it is quite difficult
to persuade the customer being used to transportation byroad to
get back to railways. While the state is not giving its preference to
ecological railways, the product managers in railways are likely to be
facing such cases quite often.

Hlavnou činnosťou firmy je zasielateľstvo a prekládka tovarov (sypkých, oceľových výrobkov a ostatného tovaru) na vstupe s Ukrajinou zo
železničných vozňov s rozchodom 1520 mm do vozňov s rozchodom 1435 mm a naopak. Firma prevádzkuje verejný colný sklad so zakrytou
halou s rozlohou 700 m 2 s voľnou plochou s rozlohou 1500 m 2 .
Súčasťou sú aj doplnkové služby, napr. úprava a triedenie tovaru, služby colného deklaranta, vypísanie nákladných listov a pod.
