Late to her dancing class, Lubov Chirkova ran to the crowded trolley bus. Once
inside the trolley a woman began making her way out and asked a man standing
next to Lubov if he was exiting, but he remained silent, the women asked the
question again this time louder, but the man still remained silent. Grumbling to
herself the woman walked away. Lubov then thought that the stranger was
apparently deaf and looked at him, at this very same moment the other woman also
looked at the stranger and seemingly both of them suddenly became numb and
stared at the man in disbelief. The “man” was very strange in appearance. He was
of an indefinite age, very slim and thin, of the same height as Lubov. He was dressed
in very light clothing for December; he wore an old fashioned thin black coat, a belt,
a white shirt, a black necktie seen under the coat. He didn’t wear a sweater or scarf.
On his head he wore a black hat, which seemed very peculiar and covered by black
Indian ink. The skin of his face was unnatural, evidently devoid of any wrinkles,
blemishes and pores (!). The skin itself was yellow and smooth as if covered by wax.
His hair seemed to have been glued to his head and it was black and cut in a very
peculiar manner giving it the appearance of a wig. His ears were also yellowish in
color and of a strange shape. The man stared ahead of him without blinking, almost
like a robot. The other women exited the trolley at the next stop but Lubov
remained behind with the weird man. She stared continuously at the stranger only
to realize that both were holding on to the same rail, however she wore gloves and
he didn’t. At the next stop the strange man exited the trolley bus alone.
