A glamorous couple of hotels, the Suite Hotel Eden Mar
and the Hotel Porto Mare are part of the Vila Porto Mare
Resort. The properties are interconnected, and share
their facilities, bringing together restaurants, bars,
swimming pools and a spa.
Location • The Vila Porto Mare Resort has really
struck gold with its setting. Peaceful and pretty top the
list, but that’s only half the picture. The big show-stealer
is the fact it sits right on Funchal’s Lido promenade.
Something of a local hotspot, it’s lined with cafés and
restaurants. Plus you’re within walking distance of the
pebble beach at Praia Formosa.
Rooms • We could wax lyrical about the bedrooms
at the Vila Porto Mare Resort all day. They’re spacious
and stylish, with cream décor, wood furnishings and
mood lighting. Plus snug beds, plump armchairs and
inviting sofas put them in comfort zone. Each one comes
with satellite TVs, air-conditioning and marble bathrooms,
too, as well as in-room safes which are payable locally.
The views steal the show, though. Whether you’re looking
out over the sea, the pool, or the gardens, they’re all
worth writing home about.
Dining • Staying at a hotel that’s part of a resort
means there are more than enough restaurants to work
your way around. For a taste of tradition, the Alfama
serves up a set menu of cuisine the old-fashioned
Portuguese way. Restaurant Med does exactly what it

says on the tin, with tasty Mediterranean dishes gracing
the menu. For irresistible Italian fare, meanwhile, pull up
a chair at the à la carte Il Basilico. Or sample the everchanging
buffets at the Atlantida.
Relaxation • Everything here is geared towards
relaxation. Take the sub-tropical gardens – grinding to a
halt here is easy. Dotted with tall palms and manicured
lawns, they frame the resort’s lagoon-like swimming
pools. There are also a couple of indoor pools complete
with saunas and whirlpool baths.
