Research Student Responsibilities
The research student:
� will participate in the regional science and engineering fair.
� will follow all appropriate safety guidelines.
� must notify the research teacher of any research plan changes prior to implementation of
said changes.
� will notify the research teacher of all mentors, qualified scientists and/or adult sponsors
involved in their research.
� will submit all forms and paperwork prior to the assigned deadlines.
� will abide by all school rules at science activities.
� will conduct research in an ethical manner.
Ethics and Science Research
Science research requires that students be highly principled in their investigations and exhibit a
high degree of integrity. Students should accept research failures and evidence that is counter
to their own hypotheses. Scientific research can be compromised by dishonesty, bias and
cheating. The science research student is responsible for maintaining the highest ethical
standards throughout their scientific pursuits.
Scientific ethics require that Research Teachers and Students:
� be dedicated to the pursuit and promotion of beneficial scientific investigation, consistent
with the mission of the Brevard Public Schools.
� discuss, manage, evaluate, and report scientific data honestly, thoroughly, and without
conflict of interest.
� not plagiarize, fabricate or falsify any part of the research.
� not intentionally withhold or use incomplete, misleading or biased information.
� return all borrowed equipment and resources in a timely manner.
� encourage constructive criticism of the research project.
� ensure safe and humane treatment of human and animal subject.
� safeguard resources entrusted to them.
