It speaks to the development of internally driven leadership and is a thought provoking, reflective and yet energizing book. The most useful feature is the reflection and discussion questions, both on personal and organizational change, found at the conclusion of each chapter. While not a quick read, it can be a valuable tool to self and organizational understanding. Healthy Congregations, A Systems Approach by Peter L. Steinke The Alban Institute 1-800-486-1318 $12.95 Few are as skilled in writing about the congregation from a systemic perspective as Steinke and in this volume he has provided a useful resource to pastors and lay persons concerned about holding in trust the well-being of their congregation. Organized around the themes of wholeness, disease, and health, the section on diseases is helpful for the comparison of clergy and mission focused churches and the dangers of rigidity. Especially useful are the reflection and discussion questions found at the end of each chapter. The Inter Change Cycle, The Secret to Getting Through Life’s Difficult Changes by Lillie Brock and Mary Ann Salerno Bridge Builder Media 1-800-878-8422 $16.00 (paperback) Based on the reality that personal change precedes organizational change, this book can be very helpful in understanding and processing change. Using a six stage model of change (loss, doubt, discomfort, discovery, understanding, and integration), the authors describe responses to each stage in terms of feelings, thoughts, and behavior and also identify skills that are needed to successfully work through each stage. At the back of the book is a series of questions to help one recognize and score in what stage of change you are in and useful color coded change cycle charts. The Leading Edge, Leadership Strategies from the New Testament by Robert Dale Abingdon Press 1-800-672-1789 $12.95 Bob Dale, who is a both a student and teacher of church leadership development, has written a valuable book for pastors and others interested in effective leadership and ministry. Using the New Testament as the framework and principal resource and stewardship as a uniting theme, he concentrates on focus and energy; flexibility and opportunity; future and horizons; and feasibility and crisis. Biblical case studies and church examples provide helpful illustrations. 10
