Last December, over 30 senior ministers gathered at a Leadership Network forum to address the issue of building an enduring church. James Collins, co-author of the best-selling book, Built to Last, was the principle resource. Highlights of the forum and participant learnings comprise the cover article of this issue of NEXT. Collins’ book, Built To Last, Successful Habits of Visionary Companies, was named the best business book of 1995 and has sold over 500,000 hardback copies. A paperback edition was released this spring. The book was the result of studying 18 enduring organizations that are the premier institutions in their industries, widely admired by their peers, and who have a long track record of making a significant impact on the world around them. Visionary companies prosper over long periods of time through multiple product life cycles and multiple generations of leaders. They are not companies without problems or failures and, for better or worse, they have made an indelible imprint on the world around them. Clock Building, Not Telling Time Having a great idea or being a charismatic visionary leader is “time telling.” Building a company that can prosper far beyond the presence of any single leader is “clock building.” “Builders of visionary companies are clock builders...they have a large portion of their Day-Timer © devoted to building a great company.” They take an architectural approach and concentrate on building the organizational traits of visionary companies. The primary output of their efforts is not the tangible implementation of a great idea, the expression of a charismatic personality, the gratification of their ego, or the accumulation of personal wealth. Their greatest creation is the company and what it stands for. Clock building requires a fundamental assumption of building for the long term. Another finding of Collins’ research is that building a visionary company does not require a high profile charismatic style of leadership. In fact, “the charismatic, visionary leader is often a liability, not an asset.” Organizations need strong leaders at all levels but, too often, dependencies get built around the charismatic leader. A Core Ideology The core ideology is the combination of core values and purpose. The essence of what makes great institutions is their core values. The context and everything else may change, but the values are not open to change. Core values do not change. They do not sway with the trends and fads of the day. Nor do they shift in response to changing market conditions. The key question is this: if the world changed and you were seriously penalized for holding that value, would you keep it People often confuse values with goals, aspirations, strategies and all that other stuff. continued on next page
