Pneumonia:
New pulmonary infiltrate (chest x-ray report)
AND Growth of pathogenic organism on sputum culture
OR Single predominant organism and many WBCs on Gram stain of
sputum
Polycythemia:
Increased erythrocytes: Red cell mass Male ≥ 37.5 mL/kg [hematology report]
Female ≥ 32.5 mL/kg [hematology report]
Reference ranges: Male 25 - 35 mL/kg body weight
Female 20 - 30 mL/kg body weight
Protein electrophoresis, serum (Cellulose acetate):
Reference ranges: Albumin 3.5 - 5.5 g/dL
α 1 -Globulin 0.1 - 0.3 g/dL
α 2 -Globulin 0.6 - 1.0 g/dL
β-Globulin 0.7 - 1.1 g/dL
γ-Globulin 0.8 - 1.6 g/dL
Prostate specific antigen, serum (PSA):
Increases with age, benign prostatic hypertrophy and carcinoma of the prostate
Reference range < 4 ng/mL
Red cell (erythrocyte) mass:
Increased: Above reference range in polycythemia vera and
secondary polycythemia
Reference ranges: Male 25 - 35 mL/kg
Female 20 - 30 mL/kg
