Technology Selection
• Major component of the 2008 Transportation Master
Plan process
• The vehicle, or vehicles, will have a major impact on the
look and feel of the system, station ti and track design,
and capacity and operations of the system
• Technology Forum Workshop held in June 2009
• Based on input received at the Technology Forum,
additional work has been undertaken to develop a
clearer set of technology parameters and provide
information on how the proposed rapid transit network,
projected ridership levels and the technology
characteristics of different rail modes interact
Technology Selection
• The City held a Technology Forum on 19-20 June 2009
to initiate the Transit Technology Choice process
• Background papers were prepared on issues affecting
technology selection
• City staff, system operators and manufacturers gave
presentations and participated in discussions to
exchange information and ideas with each other, key
stakeholders and the public
• Feedback was obtained from the public through

roundtable discussions
Technology Selection
• Following the Technology Forum, additional work was
undertaken to evaluate technology choices available
• The key findings indicate that the technology must:
– Accommodate the predicted d passenger volumes
– Fit into Ottawa’s urban environment
– Minimize capital costs
– Minimize the lifetime operating and maintenance costs
– Be able to respond to future land use changes within the City
and the demand for travel
– Take advantage of the most current technologies
– Be proven in service
– Be suitable for the climate in Ottawa
