Hafen Wien’s boom continues
Even though the Hafen Wien Group had to face economically
challenging conditions in the fiscal year 2014,
it once again achieved a very pleasingly result and was
even able to continue the success of the record-breaking
year 2013. In this respect, the core business sectors,
container handling by Wiencont, real-estate, storage,
car, handling and forwarding services, made a major
contribution in achieving that goal. Other locations and
subsidiaries of the Hafen Wien Group such as the Danube
Region, the DDSG Blue Danube, Marina Wien and
Terminal Sped (customs & transport disposition) played
an important role in this context.

Hafen Wien is growing
Impressive sums were invested in the Hafen Wien Group
in 2014. About 8 million Euros were spent. In 2014, a
considerable amount was invested in the “Freudenau
Harbour Reclamation” project, which aims at creating
more space for container business as well as new handling
and storage facilities in order to prepare the Port
of Vienna for future demand in handling the growing
quantity of goods. After the completion of the project the
space potential will amount to 70,000 m 2 .
In cooperation with a high & heavy specialist, a
heavy cargo centre was established in Albern Harbour
which allows the handling of goods weighing up to 450
tons and more. In this context, Hafen Wien will establish
more than 4,000 m² of operating space.
2014 Best Practices
In summer 2014, Hafen Wien once again proved to be
the specialist for high & heavy handling. A high-pressure
vessel with approximately 190 tons was loaded by
using the tandem lifting procedure involving two high
& heavy mobile cranes, in conjunction with a spectacular
heavy cargo handling project. Subsequently the vessel
was transported from the Port of Vienna to Russia via
motor ship.
WienCont, a subsidiary of Hafen Wien, operates a
container terminal with a feature that is unique across
Europe. The so called “Schwungeinfahrt” (access with
momentum) allows efficient handling without shunting;
it can be accessed from both sides, is directly linked to
the international railway net and thus saves both time
and costs for the transport industry.
Ecology and sustainability represent two fundamental
aspects for the Port of Vienna. For this reason outdoor
lighting in Albern Harbour was converted to LED.
Consequently, the use of 48 lamps in total and an operating
time of 4,000 h/year have resulted in the saving
of approximately 17,088 kWh, which corresponds to the
energy consumption of four family households.
