Among the different specialized
vehicles by the company
STRAŽAN, s. r. o., this vehicle
is, so to say, twice as much special. At first
glance, the tanker truck is employed to accomplish
two principal missions – to extinguish
fires even in difficult terrain conditions
and to change contaminated water into safe.
In both cases of deployment water is the vehicle’s
key domain. In addition, the tanker allows
for the ADR fuel to be transported with
a simple adjustment.
The specialized Tanker Vehicle for Fire
Extinguishing and Water Treatment/Transport
is comprised of the Mercedes-Benz Zetros
2733/6x6 chassis and a specialized module,
designed entirely in Slovakia, from its concept
proposal through design development
to final production. Also participating in the
vehicle’s production were the companies Aqua
Solutions, s. r. o. and IPM Engineering, s. r. o.
The tank itself is made from stainless steel
with storage capacity of 8,000 litres of water
and 200 litres of foam. It is anchored to the
load-bearing frame over the rear axles and features
the Hiromax fire-extinguishing system,
which is designed for extinguishing Class A
and B fires by water aerosol or water – while
using additives or without additives. The water
pump and the air compressor are hydraulically
driven by the transmission. The tank
is used to carry all the other components of
the module, the vehicle’s equipment and the
sheathing of the module. Rolling doors provide
access to the side storage compartments
housing vehicle equipment.
Carried by the 6 x 6 axis with enhanced clearance
for difficult forest conditions, the tanker/
fire-fighting vehicle, which is also capable of
operating in desert conditions, demonstrates
a 1,110mm water fording capability.
Its uniqueness consists in the fact that the
module design incorporates also a special
water treatment system, which is extremely
useful during emergency situations, whether
that be floods or earthquakes. Especially in
times when the water sources are destroyed
or rendered unusable. It is the only vehicle of
this type in the world, one which integrates
a fully operating fire-fighting capability with
a special water treatment system capable of
treating water for a town of 20 000 residents
in an affected area on a day-to-day basis. This
is thanks to the Pentair Water Miracle system
– a unique, patented Pentair X-Flow membrane
technology – delivering up to 3 000 l/h
of safe water, usable even for drinking.
The vehicle’s specialized module was entered
into the International Registry under
No. 001243687 – 0001, the Register of
the Industrial Property Office of the Slovak
Republic under No. 27667 and, at the same
time, an application form has been submitted
to register the product in the Utility Samples
Register under No. PÚV 00164 – 2010 and
in the Patents Register under No. PP00032
– 2011.
The installed Pentair Water Miracle system,
with a total weight of approx. 300 kg, is a
filtration device based on membrane technology.
In simple terms, one may envisage it as a
big straw for drinking with a membrane trapping
contaminated particles and microorganisms
with a size of 10-15 nanometres (nm),
whereas the smallest known virus has approx.
25 nm and bacteria 300 nm. The technology
is capable of rejecting 99.9999 per cent of
all bacteria. The system is operational also
in NATO militaries. The reliability of the water
treatment system is based on filtration of
water-borne contaminated particles, bacteria
and viruses without any chemical additives.
When sources of drinking water are inaccessible
or unusable during floods or other emergency
situations, upon reaching the affected
area this specialised vehicle uses its external
pump and hose to draw water from a natural
source into its fully automated membrane system,
fully controlled by computer. Following
its treatment, water is stored in a 100-litre
tank and ready for direct use. The self-cleaning
regime goes on automatically every 15 minutes.
During this phase the process is reversed
and clean water from the 100-litre storage
tank flows back through the membranes and
the trapped small particles flow out via a water
output device. Then the filtration system is
ready for another round of water treatment.
The cleaning process lasts for approx. 30 seconds.
In this way the system produces 3,000
l/h of clean water. The operation of the fully
automated system is fairly simple. One only
needs to push a specific bottom to turn the
system on or off.
