CVIČENIE / EXERCISE
Slovakia hosted the MACE XIII
International Air Exercise in its airspace
between 16 and 27 April. The
aim of the exercise was to practice the NATO procedures
employed in planning and conducting tactical
air operations, especially those aimed at neutralizing
enemy air defences in an environment of radioelectronic
jamming. A series of tasks involved fighter
pilots in air combat missions and commanders in supervising
the air operations from an airborne AWACS
aircraft.
Sliač Airfield, which serves as the main airbase of the
Slovak Air Force, provided the setting for aircraft takeoffs
and landings. The SVK Air Force is entrusted with
protecting the airspace of the Slovak Republic and,
while operating within NATINADS, even the whole of the
NATO Alliance. According to SVK Air Force Commander
Maj. Gen. Martin Babiak, the air exercise contributed to
enhancing the skills of Service personnel in compliance
with NATO standards. From this point of view, the exercise
should be viewed as one of the most important
exercises of the SVK Air Force.
The exercise was attended by Air Force and Ground
Force units from 13 different countries, with a fleet
of MiG-29s and L-39s (Slovakia), Rafales and Mirage
2000Ds (France), F-16s (Denmark), DA-20 Falcons
(Norway), Learjet 40s (Nemecko), while one stage of
the exercise also included F-4s (Turkey).
Land-based systems were operated by the Nitra-based
air defence units and the radar surveillance companies
(Command, Control and Surveillance Brigade) from
Zvolen. The exercise unfolded at three different facilities
operating under the SVK Air Force, in particular at Sliač
Air Force Base and within the premises of the Zvolenbased
Command, Control and Surveillance Brigade and
the Nitra-based Air Defence Missile Brigade.
