The following checks are also recommended on any certificate installed into<br />

Microsoft Internet Explorer, for use as a client side certificate. Double-click any<br />

certificate entry and verify the following details.<br />

Under the General tab, the certificate’s intended use includes: Proving your<br />

identity to a remote computer (required)<br />

Under the General tab: You have a private key that corresponds to this<br />

certificate (required)<br />

Under the Certificate Path, the Certificate status is given. If you are presented<br />

with the message:<br />

This CA Root certificate is not trusted because it is not in the Trusted<br />

Root Certification Authorities Store<br />

then you must install the corresponding signing root CA certificate in the<br />

Certification Authorities Store.<br />

Figure 10-41 show the resulting personal certificate generated when using the<br />

Thawte Freemail Certificate Program. The certificate subject Distinguished<br />

Name (DN) includes two components; the e-mail entity (E) and the Common<br />

Name (CN) Thawte Freemail Member.<br />
