ABINGDON, Box Hill - Duncan Wilson<br />

Construction of a building in the garden of 47 Bowyer Road<br />

(OS SU 4990 7999) disturbed seven skeletons (PRN 12, 113) which<br />

cut through late Roman settlement features (PRN 12, 114). The 'three<br />

stratified skeletons were buried head to toe, on a north-south<br />

alignment, in a single grave. No dating evidence was assodiated<br />

with the burial, but a 4th.century terminus post quem <strong>for</strong> the<br />

grave is provided by late Roman pottery and a 3rd century denarius<br />

fragment, from the gully which it cuts. Roman and early Saxon<br />

parallels exist <strong>for</strong> practice of laying stone slabs on the body, as<br />

noted at Box Hill.<br />

ABINGDON, Nuffield Way Allotmenta<br />

The Abingdon Archaeological and Hiatorical Society ia maintaining<br />

a-watch <strong>for</strong> archaeological material:whilai dcintract'ors lay services<br />

<strong>for</strong> the Yale of the White Horse District <strong>Council</strong> to-the south of the<br />

M.G. works <strong>for</strong> the latest extension of the induatrial estate. A<br />

Romano-<strong>British</strong> cemetery lies:along the northern edge of the site and<br />

it ip hoped that it.will be possible.to explore this early'in '1980.<br />

16. ABINGDON, Peachcroft.Houalng, Estate<br />

Several fragments of bronze metalwork including a Roman Zof<br />

century AD enamelled brooch have been found during building,operations<br />

on the Peachcroft Housing Estate which is sited on the northern edge<br />

of Abingaon Parish:(PRN' 11,882; Centred SU 512 988).<br />

ABINGDON, AbingdOn. School<br />

Romano-<strong>British</strong> settlement features and domestic refuse were<br />

exposed during the building of the neW'schoOl theatre. Romano-<br />

<strong>British</strong> material bas been found close by on several previous.<br />

occasions (VRN 12,112; Centred SU 4945 9532).<br />

ABINGDON, 60-64 West St. Helen's Street<br />

TWo sections were obtained by removing the cellar walls to'<br />

properties nos 63 and 64 in order to obtain general in<strong>for</strong>mation On<br />

the nature and extent of any pre-medieval occupation levels. As with<br />
