24: BLEWBURYi-new vicarage --<br />

Diming the construction of the new vicarage at Blewbury, the<br />

tOntractor recovered fragments of five humawskeletonS, three<br />

adult, one immature adult and one infant. Three fragments of<br />

Méaieval pottery collected from the'site,Were identified'by<br />

Maureen Mellor. Although the age of the 'skeletons remains<br />

unknown their presence does suggest that the eastern side of the<br />

churchyard may have contracted at some-time in the pdSt (PRN-11,993;<br />

'Grid Ref SU 5319 8594).<br />

BRIZE NORTON,-Norton Ditch'<br />

Recutting the stream called Norton Ditch which <strong>for</strong>ms the parish<br />

boundary between Brize:Norton and Lew has sectioned a stone bottomed<br />

<strong>for</strong>d about one-third, of a mile south of AbingdonLane (PRN 11,879;<br />

SP-3067 0712). The site of thislord lay <strong>for</strong>gotten beneath some:<br />

0.6.m of black sat'. Earthwork remains of the sunken entry to the<br />

<strong>for</strong>d survive on the south-eastern side but the north-western side has<br />

been obliterated<br />

CAVERSHAM<br />

_Extraction continues at the Redland's gravel pit. Ruth and<br />

Ernest Just are.continuing to watch <strong>for</strong> any new archaeologiCal<br />

-material-although so-far nothing has been found.<br />

CHECKENDON, The DeiAl .Churchyard,<br />

.Woodland clearance prior to a ttee'replanting scheMe has enabled<br />

the OX<strong>for</strong>dshire Archaeological:Unit aSSisted by the South Ox<strong>for</strong>dshire<br />

Archaeological Group to.assess the archaeological value of an earthwork<br />

knOwn as'the Devil's ChUrchyard.<br />

The site lies in,a heavily wooded area of the Chilterns in<br />

(Checkendon parish (FRN 9131;. Centred SU 6525 8400). The enclosure<br />

lies on sloping ground facing south-west across a steep sided dry<br />

valley. Sited just above 150 M above sea level .the subsoil is<br />

Plateau Drift Comprising chiefly clay and flints over chalk.<br />

The site was surveyed by two in-service trainee's, 'Carlos<br />

Urrejola and:Jleather Bird (Fig.47.). An irregular ditched enclosure<br />

with remains cif- An inner and outer bank lies down-slope from a curvilinear<br />

ditch:and bank at the top of the hill to the east and south of<br />

the enclosure.. The quality of the earthwork remainS varies<br />

considerablYfroiSpoint to point. The banks are very lqw withrhe<br />

exception of a length of theouter bank on the south-western side of<br />

the enclosure where there-is a difference of some 1.5 m.from the top<br />

of the bank to the.rbottom of the unexcavated ditch. A timber haUlage,<br />

track has levelled 4.06rtion'oethebank 'On .thSSOUthWedtern'Sideof<br />

the enclosure creating the possibly false impression of an entrance<br />
